Il giardino di Pantaneto Residenza D’Epoca
Siena, ItalyYou know what strikes you first about Il Giardino di Pantaneto? It’s actually tucked into this narrow medieval street that most tourists just rush past on their way to the Piazza del Campo – which, honestly, is exactly why it works so well. Via Pantaneto has this authentic Sienese rhythm to it, where you’ll hear the morning coffee ritual at the bar downstairs and catch glimpses of locals heading to work instead of just endless streams of tour groups. The building itself is one of those gorgeous residenze d’epoca that Siena does so well – think exposed brick, original frescoed ceilings, and these wonderful thick walls that keep everything blissfully cool even in July. I mean, they’ve restored it beautifully without making it feel like a museum, which is honestly harder to pull off than you’d think.
The rooms have this lived-in elegance that feels right for the city – antique furniture that’s actually comfortable, proper shutters that block out light completely (trust me, you’ll appreciate this after a day of Tuscan sun), and bathrooms that manage to be both historically respectful and completely functional. What really gets me is how they’ve handled the garden situation – hence the name, obviously – but it’s not just some tiny courtyard. There’s actually space to sit with morning coffee or evening wine, and the sound of the fountain sort of drowns out any street noise, though honestly Via Pantaneto isn’t exactly a major thoroughfare anyway. The staff clearly knows their stuff about Siena too, not just the obvious tourist spots but things like which enoteca has the best Brunello selection or where to find parking that won’t cost you a fortune (spoiler: it’s trickier than you’d think in the historic center).
Look, a 9.4 rating sounds almost too good to be true, but after staying here I get it. It’s that sweet spot where everything just works without feeling overly managed or stuffy. The location puts you maybe three minutes from the Duomo if you know the back streets, five if you stick to the main routes, and you’re close enough to the Campo to pop over for aperitivo but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the evening crowds outside your window. Plus – and this might sound small but it matters – they actually understand international plug adapters and have decent wifi throughout, which isn’t always a given in these historic buildings. The breakfast situation is solid too, proper Italian coffee and pastries, nothing fancy but exactly what you want before heading out to explore. If you’re looking for that authentic Siena experience without sacrificing comfort, this place honestly nails it.

What could be improved: There is nothing that I didn’t like
What could be improved: Nothing.
What could be improved: Breakfast was okay. You needed to have an assigned time for sitting. We chose the last sitting and the woman was already breaking down the tables before we sat. Needed to ask for more coffee. On our last morning we came 15 minutes early because we were leaving and the lady had an attitude. Not very welcoming and lacking hospitality
What could be improved: Nothing!
Departed too early for have breakfast at the hotel.
The most wonderful view in Siena
Kind + friendly staff
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: Quite expensive compared to all the other hotels we booked in the area, and for this price we would have expected a kettle, coffee machine, fridge. Breakfast was fine but not great.
