Florence Comfort B&B
Florence, ItalyYou know what caught me off guard about Florence Comfort B&B? The name actually undersells it – this place has way more character than your typical bed and breakfast. I mean, first off, that address on Via Palazzo dei Diavoli (literally “Palace of Devils Street”) sounds dramatic, but honestly it’s this quiet residential street that most tourists never stumble across. You’re about a 15-minute walk from the Duomo, which is perfect because you avoid all that morning chaos when the tour groups descend, but you can still wander over for sunset photos without breaking a sweat.
The building itself has this worn Florentine charm – thick stone walls that actually keep things cool in summer, unlike some of those converted palazzos closer to the center where you’re roasting by 10 AM. The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully simple. Nothing fancy, but the beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about this), and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without living out of a suitcase. The breakfast setup is where they really shine though – proper Italian coffee, obviously, but also local pastries that change based on what’s good that day. The owner, Maria, has this way of suggesting places to eat that aren’t in any guidebook but somehow always hit the spot.
Here’s the thing about the location that took me a while to appreciate – you’re in an actual neighborhood. There’s a little alimentari around the corner where locals grab their groceries, and this unassuming trattoria two blocks over that does the best cacio e pepe I had in Florence. The walk to the main sights is mostly flat (thank god, because cobblestones are brutal on your feet after a few days), and you pass through some lovely residential areas where you can peek into courtyards and get a feel for how people actually live here. Parking is street parking, which can be tricky, but Maria knows all the spots and timing – apparently Tuesday mornings are golden if you need to move your car.
The only real downside is that rooms facing the street can get a bit noisy in the early morning when the delivery trucks start making their rounds, but honestly, that’s just Florence being Florence. You’re not here to sleep until noon anyway, right? What really won me over was how the place feels like staying with a knowledgeable local friend rather than just another hotel transaction. Maria remembers your coffee preferences, gives you actual useful tips about avoiding crowds at the Uffizi, and somehow always knows when the neighborhood’s having one of those spontaneous street festivals that make you feel like you’ve stumbled into a movie. For the price point and that genuine Florentine residential experience, it’s pretty hard to beat.
