La Fonderia Firenze
Florence, ItalyYou know what struck me first about La Fonderia Firenze? The name actually makes sense once you’re there – this used to be an old foundry, and they’ve kept just enough industrial touches to remind you without making it feel like some forced theme park situation. It’s tucked away on Via della Fonderia, which honestly I’d never heard of before booking (and I’ve been to Florence maybe six times), but it turns out to be this perfect little pocket south of the center where you’re close enough to walk everywhere but far enough to escape the tourist mayhem.
The whole vibe is… well, it’s hard to pin down exactly. Industrial chic, I guess, but done by people who actually understand what that means. The rooms have these beautiful exposed beam ceilings – real ones, not fake – and the bathroom fixtures are this perfect mix of modern and vintage that doesn’t feel try-hard. What I really appreciated was the attention to sound; you’d think with all that concrete and steel it might echo, but they’ve somehow made it incredibly quiet. I mean, Florence can get pretty rowdy at night, especially in summer, but I slept like a baby every night I was there. The beds are proper firm too, which might not be everyone’s thing, but after days of walking on cobblestones, my back thanked me.
Here’s the thing about the location that took me a day to figure out – you’re actually in this really authentic neighborhood where people live and work, not just the historic center where everything’s geared toward tourists. There’s this little alimentari around the corner where the owner remembers your face after one visit, and honestly some of the best coffee I had in the city was at this no-name bar two blocks away where I was literally the only non-Italian. The walk to the Duomo is maybe 15 minutes, but it’s through actual Florence streets where you’ll pass craftsmen’s workshops and neighborhood trattorias that don’t have English menus. The staff at La Fonderia seemed to get this – they’re not just giving you the standard tourist recommendations, but actually pointing you toward places they’d go themselves. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too; none of that overly formal hotel theater, just genuine people who seemed happy to see you and knew their stuff about the city. If I had one small complaint, it’s that the elevators are a bit slow, but honestly, that’s probably the most minor thing ever. I’d definitely stay here again – actually, I’m already planning to when I go back in the spring.

Guest Reviews
Great room for 2 adults and 2 young adults, each pair having their own bathroom, with lovely fluffy towels.
Our host was friendly, efficient and the breakfast had something for all- hot and cold. There were tasty snacks in the shared space and a different cake each day.
What could be improved: The air conditioning struggled in extreme temperatures but so did we all!
Joan was a lovely host and very helpful with information.
What could be improved: Bathroom very small. Difficult to get in and out.
What could be improved: Our two young kids were with us and it was a little far for them to walk and also a little hard to navigate the bus system from this location.
Cleanliness - very clean - spotless
Breakfast - not a vast menu but absolutely adequate and very nice
Staff - Joan could not do more for us - she was extremely helpful, welcoming and friendly
THANK YOU! We will be returning.
What could be improved: Nothing - all good - thank you!
Our room was very small for two adults but it was still ok for 1 night visit. The patio is nice.
What could be improved: The sound proofing was quite bad. If it was noisy outside the building or in the b&b lobby we could hear everything. So bring your ear plugs!
What could be improved: Clearly is not that I didn’t like it, for sure, but I’m giving this advice to not recommend the room with external bathroom to someone alone with mobility issues because it’s a little bit difficult to get to it - everything else was amazing.
What could be improved: A few more stairs than expected.
