You know what struck me first about the Starhotels Michelangelo? It’s got this surprisingly elegant lobby that feels more upscale than you’d expect from the outside – I mean, the building itself is pretty standard, but step inside and there’s this polished marble thing happening that actually works. The location is honestly perfect if you’re planning to do Florence properly. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella station, which sounds touristy but is actually brilliant because that’s where all the good buses connect, and you can walk to the Duomo in about ten minutes without dealing with the crazy narrow streets around San Lorenzo market.

The rooms are what I’d call “comfortable European business hotel” – not huge by American standards, but thoughtfully laid out with decent storage and bathrooms that actually have proper water pressure (trust me, this matters in Italy). The soundproofing is pretty solid too, which you’ll appreciate since Viale Fratelli Rosselli can get busy during morning rush hour. What I really liked was how they’ve managed to avoid that generic chain hotel feel – there’s Italian marble in the bathrooms and the furniture feels substantial, not like it’ll fall apart if you look at it wrong. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building, even in the elevator, which honestly puts it ahead of some five-star places I’ve stayed.

Here’s the thing about this location that locals know but tourists often miss – you’re perfectly positioned between the train station and the historic center, but you’re also walking distance from some of the best non-touristy restaurants. There’s this little osteria called Il Latini about six blocks away that serves the kind of ribollita that makes you understand why Florentines are so proud of their food. The concierge (an older gentleman named Marco when I was there) actually knows the neighborhood and can point you toward the good gelato place on Via dei Banchi instead of the overpriced tourist traps near the Ponte Vecchio. Parking is available but pricey – honestly, just use the train if you’re coming from Rome or take the bus from the airport. The 8.6 rating makes sense to me; it’s not going to blow your mind, but it gets all the important stuff right and the staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay work. I’d definitely book it again, especially if I was traveling with someone who wanted to feel settled and comfortable while still being in the heart of everything.
