Castel Monastero – The Leading Hotels of the World
You know what hit me first when I pulled up to Castel Monastero? The fact that you’re literally staying in a medieval village – and I mean actually medieval, not some Disney version of it. This place sits in the hills between Siena and the Chianti region, about 20 minutes from Castelnuovo Berardenga proper, and honestly, the drive up through the cypress-lined roads feels like you’re entering a different century.
The hotel occupies this restored 11th-century monastery complex, complete with stone walls that have seen centuries of Tuscan history. What’s brilliant about it is how they’ve managed to preserve all that ancient character while somehow fitting in things like a spa that’s carved into the hillside and rooms with modern bathrooms that don’t feel jarringly out of place. I stayed in one of the tower suites, and the views across the Crete Senesi – those rolling clay hills that look like giant waves frozen in time – were absolutely stunning, especially at sunset when everything turns golden. The rooms themselves feel authentically rustic with those thick stone walls and wooden beams, though fair warning: the WiFi can be spotty in some of the older sections.
The property sprawls across this hillside village setting, so you’re not dealing with crowded hotel corridors but rather wandering through actual medieval streets between your room and dinner. Speaking of dinner, the restaurant sources tons of ingredients from their own organic farm and vineyard, which you can actually see from most rooms. The breakfast spread is proper Italian – fresh pastries, local cheeses, and coffee that’ll ruin you for hotel coffee anywhere else. There’s also this incredible infinity pool that seems to drop right into the Tuscan countryside, though it gets pretty busy during peak season (July and August can be intense). The spa is worth mentioning too – it’s built into natural caves and feels like some ancient Roman retreat, complete with treatments using herbs from their gardens. Parking is included and easy, which is a relief since you’ll definitely want a car to explore the surrounding wine country. The staff genuinely knows the area and can point you toward family-run wineries and trattorias that most tourists never find. It’s pricey, sure, but for a splurge in one of Italy’s most beautiful regions, staying in an actual piece of history while being pampered like royalty? It’s pretty hard to beat.
