Camelia
Greve in Chianti, ItalySo I stumbled upon Hotel Camelia during a wine-tasting trip through Chianti, and honestly, it’s one of those places that looks way better in the photos than you’d expect from the rating. Don’t get me wrong – the 7 out of 10 isn’t unfair, but when you’re sitting on the terrace watching the sun set over those endless vineyard rows, you sort of forget about the slightly outdated bathroom fixtures.
The thing about Lucolena is that it’s properly tucked away – I mean, you’re not accidentally ending up here on your way to Florence. It’s about a 20-minute drive from Greve in Chianti, winding through those narrow roads where you’ll inevitably get stuck behind a tractor hauling grapes during harvest season. But that’s actually part of the charm, you know? The hotel sits right in the heart of wine country, and the staff – they really know their stuff about the local vintages. The concierge, Marco, spent a good hour walking me through which cantinas were worth visiting versus the tourist traps. You can walk to Castello di Lucolena in about ten minutes if you’re into exploring medieval ruins, though fair warning – it’s a bit of a climb.
What really got me was the breakfast setup. They do this thing where everything’s sourced from within like a 15-kilometer radius – the honey comes from hives you can actually see from some of the rooms, and the pecorino is from this tiny farm down the hill. The coffee’s properly strong too, none of that watery hotel nonsense. Parking’s easy enough (there’s a small lot behind the building), and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. The rooms themselves are comfortable but not fancy – think rustic elegance rather than modern luxury. Mine had these thick stone walls that kept everything cool even in late August, though the Wi-Fi was a bit spotty on the second floor. I actually didn’t mind much since I was there to disconnect anyway. The pool area gets pretty busy around 3 PM when day-trippers show up, but early morning or evening it’s perfect for a quiet swim. If you’re looking for a genuine Tuscan experience without the Siena crowds, and you don’t need every amenity to be cutting-edge, Camelia hits that sweet spot between authentic and comfortable.
