Uno Sguardo su Firenze
So I stumbled across Uno Sguardo su Firenze completely by accident – well, actually my original booking fell through and I needed something fast in the Santa Maria Novella area. Best travel disaster ever, honestly. The name literally means “a glance at Florence,” and you know what? They weren’t being modest.
The thing is, Piazza dè Salterelli isn’t one of those squares tourists usually find on their first visit. It’s tucked behind the main Santa Maria Novella train station area, which sounds sketchy but actually works perfectly. You’re maybe a four-minute walk from the station (crucial when you’re dragging luggage), but far enough away that you don’t hear the constant rumble of trains. The piazza itself is tiny – I mean, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it tiny – but it’s got this quiet, residential feel that makes you feel like you’re staying in someone’s neighborhood instead of tourist central.
The hotel sits in this beautifully restored building that’s got character without being stuffy about it. Check-in was refreshingly normal – no marble lobbies or intimidating uniformed staff, just genuine people who actually knew their neighborhood. My room faced the piazza, and while it wasn’t huge, the windows were these gorgeous tall things that let in incredible light. The decor walks that fine line between elegant and liveable… sort of like staying in a well-appointed Italian apartment rather than a cookie-cutter hotel room. The beds are actually comfortable (not always a given in historic European buildings), and the bathrooms are modern without losing the building’s original charm.
What really won me over was the location’s sweet spot factor. Via dei Banchi is right around the corner – that’s where locals grab their morning coffee, not the tourist-trap places near the Duomo. You can walk to Santa Maria Novella basilica in literally two minutes, but more importantly, you’re positioned perfectly for exploring beyond the obvious attractions. The Oltrarno district is an easy stroll across Ponte alla Carraia, and you can reach the Sant’Ambrogio market area without fighting through the usual crowds around Ponte Vecchio.
Honestly, the 8.3 rating makes sense – it’s solidly good without trying to be something it’s not. The staff genuinely seems to care about your experience, which you notice in small ways. They’ll draw you actual routes on maps instead of just pointing vaguely toward major landmarks. Breakfast is served in this lovely room that feels more like a friend’s dining room than a hotel restaurant, and they actually stock local pastries alongside the standard continental spread.
The area gets pretty quiet at night, which some people love and others might find too sleepy. If you’re looking for nightlife right outside your door, this isn’t your spot. But if you want to experience Florence from a more authentic base – where you’ll hear church bells instead of tour groups under your window – this place delivers exactly what its name promises. Just that perfect glance at the real Florence, without all the noise.

Beautiful memories of a fabulous apartment with a helpful host.
Wonderful experience!
It wasn't too difficult to find the property since there was a sign. Checkin was on the 3rd floor and the staff were friendly and could speak English. We were assigned to a room on the 5th floor. There's an elevator that fit 2 people and 2 large luggages. Property was safe since only occupants could enter via key and it was well lit at night.
The room was clean and spacious. We had enough space to open 1 large luggage at a time. Housekeeping cleaned the room everyday and refilled the coffee pods and tissue if you ran out.
Overall, would definitely stay again! Amazing value for money. If you have heavy luggage with you, just book a taxi from the airport/train station to get to the property. It'll be difficult to drag luggages along cobblestone.
