Borgo degli Ulivi
You know what struck me first about Borgo degli Ulivi? It’s how they managed to tuck this place into the hillside at Spaccamontagna without making it feel like you’re staying in the middle of nowhere. I mean, you’re technically outside Porto Ercole proper, but honestly – that’s the whole point. The winding road up gets a bit narrow (rental car companies probably hate this place), but once you’re there, you get why they built it here instead of down in the port area with all the tourist chaos.
The property itself feels like someone’s incredibly well-maintained family estate that just happens to have room for guests. The olive trees aren’t just decorative – they’re actually part of a working grove, and you’ll smell that earthy, herb-scented air the moment you step out of your car. What I really appreciated was how the buildings seem to grow out of the landscape rather than being plunked down on top of it. The stone walls have that weathered Tuscan look that takes decades to achieve naturally, and the terraced gardens… well, they’re the kind of thing that makes you want to wake up early just to have coffee outside. The staff clearly knows this area inside and out – they’ll point you toward the best coves for swimming (the one near Feniglia is incredible but gets packed by 11am) and actually know which restaurants in town are worth the drive down.
I’ll be honest, the 4-star rating feels conservative when you’re looking at that 9.1 guest score. The rooms have this understated elegance that feels more like staying in a sophisticated friend’s guest house than a hotel. Air conditioning that actually works (crucial in summer), and the beds are legitimately comfortable – not just hotel-brochure comfortable. The pool area is where you’ll probably spend most of your afternoon hours, especially since it faces west toward the sea. You can’t quite see the water from most spots, but you get these glimpses through the trees that somehow feel more special than a full-on ocean view. Parking is included, which might sound trivial until you’ve tried to find a spot in Porto Ercole during peak season. The whole place has this quiet sophistication that attracts couples and families who want to experience the Argentario area without dealing with the scene down at the marina. It’s about a 10-minute drive to the heart of Porto Ercole, but you’ll find yourself wanting to linger at the hotel more than you’d expect.
