Villa Serena & Dépendances
Cortona, ItalyFirst Impressions
You know what hits you first about Villa Serena & Dépendances? It’s not just another hotel — it feels like you’ve stumbled onto someone’s private estate in the Tuscan hills. The property sits in Località Le Contesse, which honestly sounds more romantic in Italian than any translation could capture. When you pull up the winding drive, there’s this immediate sense that you’ve found something special, something that most tourists rushing through Cortona probably miss entirely.
Location & Setting
The location is actually brilliant, and I mean that in the most practical way possible. You’re close enough to Cortona’s medieval center that you can easily walk to those Instagram-worthy stone streets and hilltop views, but far enough out that you escape the day-tripper crowds. The couples who stay here seem to get it — there’s something about being tucked away in the Tuscan countryside that just works for romance. From the property, you can see why this area has been enchanting visitors for centuries, with those rolling hills that look like they were painted specifically for postcards.
The Accommodations
The villa itself has this authentic Italian charm that you can’t fake — thick stone walls, terracotta floors, and windows that frame the landscape like living artwork. What I really appreciate is how they’ve maintained the character of the original buildings while making sure everything actually works (you’d be surprised how rare that combination is in historic properties). The dépendances — basically charming outbuildings — give you options depending on what kind of stay you’re after. Some guests prefer the main villa for that full Tuscan experience, while others love the privacy of the separate accommodations.
The Tuscan Experience
Here’s where Villa Serena & Dépendances really shines — it gives you that authentic Tuscan experience without feeling like you’re staying in a museum. The property has this lived-in quality that makes you feel like a welcomed guest rather than just another tourist. You can actually imagine Italian families gathering here for generations, sharing meals and stories. The grounds invite you to slow down, maybe with a glass of local wine as the sun sets over the Val di Chiana. It’s the kind of place where you find yourself taking deeper breaths and checking your phone less often.
Why Guests Love It
The high ratings make perfect sense once you’ve been here — Villa Serena & Dépendances delivers on that promise of an authentic Italian escape. Recent guests consistently praise the location, and honestly, they’re not wrong. There’s something magical about waking up in the Tuscan countryside, knowing you can spend your morning exploring Cortona’s ancient streets and your afternoon lounging in this peaceful retreat. It’s particularly perfect for couples who want to experience the real Tuscany, not just the tourist version. The combination of privacy, authentic architecture, and that unbeatable setting creates exactly the kind of memories that make you start planning your return visit before you’ve even left.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: There are issues with the dishwasher, heat, toilets. However, the villa is simply wonderful and these issues did not distract from the comfort or location.
What could be improved: Be aware that Google maps may try to take you to the neighbor's house coming from the south. Call Gianluca to find out key information (we were told to pick up the key at another location, but it was not there) and directions.
What could be improved: -
The view is spectacular. The pool is very nice and we used it twice. There really isn’t much noise, other than a car here or there, coming down the road. We were very pleased with the property and would highly recommend.
During the day we were able to get out and do little day trips. Regrettably, we did not do much in the town of Cortona. I heard there are some good restaurants there.
What could be improved: The only thing that was a bit challenging is getting to the property and the parking. Once we were successfully there, it was not difficult. We just found it a bit tricky to navigate the roads. Fortunately, the property manager was able to talk with us on what app while we share navigation and he got us the right place.
As for the parking, there are spaces, just tricky turns to get in and out.
Lastly, the garbage drop off is a ways down the road. Sorta mucky having to take garbage in your car to drop it off.
What could be improved: WiFi was not working during our stay, however 5G reception was adequate for us.
What could be improved: The location does not exist on Google maps and we had an awful time finding it - both the first time and a couple of times after that. Very frustrating. Finally I found that Hotel Oasi Neumann is on Google maps and the driveway of the villa is only a couple of hundred meters from there, so used that. Also, at least for non-European visitors, it would help to have a chart on the kitchen wall explaining how to use the appliances. We struggled for a time to sort out what had to be done first to start the stove, etc. It would also be good if there were an electric power strip so more than one appliance could be plugged in if the electricity is up to it.
What could be improved: kitchen appliances and electrical connections need updating
