BORGO IN SAN ANGELO
Cortona, ItalyFirst Impressions
Walking up to BORGO IN SAN ANGELO, you immediately understand why this place scores so highly with guests — it’s tucked into one of those perfectly preserved corners of Cortona that feels almost too good to be true. The medieval stone buildings seem to grow right out of the hillside, and honestly, the views across the Tuscan countryside are the kind that make you stop mid-conversation. I mean, there’s something about the way the morning light hits these ancient walls that just gets you, you know? The property has this authentic, lived-in feel that’s become increasingly rare in tourist-heavy areas like this.
Location & Neighborhood
What really sets this place apart is its position in Cortona — you’re actually within the historic center, but on a quieter street that locals still use for their daily routines. Via C:S:S.Angelo isn’t one of those main tourist drags, which means you get the authentic medieval atmosphere without the constant crowds. Couples absolutely love it here (they rate the location 9.6, which honestly doesn’t surprise me), and it’s easy to see why. You can walk to the main piazza in just a few minutes, but when you want to escape the day-trippers, you’ve got this peaceful corner to retreat to. The fact that there’s free private parking on-site is actually huge — anyone who’s tried to navigate a car through these narrow Tuscan hill towns will appreciate not having to hunt for a spot.
The Property Experience
The borgo itself feels more like staying in a carefully restored medieval village than a traditional hotel. The stone architecture is completely authentic — these aren’t modern buildings trying to look old, but actual historic structures that have been thoughtfully updated. What I love is how they’ve managed to add modern comfort without losing that sense of stepping back in time. The common areas have this wonderful lived-in quality, and you’ll often find yourself just sitting outside in the evening, watching the light change over the valley below. It’s the kind of place where you actually want to spend time at the property, not just use it as a base for sightseeing.
Practical Comforts
Beyond the obvious charm, there are practical reasons why this place works so well for travelers. The rooms maintain that rustic Tuscan character — think exposed stone walls and traditional furnishings — but everything functions exactly as it should. The beds are genuinely comfortable (not always a given in these historic properties), and the bathrooms strike that tricky balance between period charm and modern functionality. You know what really impressed me? The attention to details like proper lighting for reading and enough outlets for your devices — small things that show they actually think about how people travel today.
Why Guests Love It
That 9.2 guest rating really tells the story here — people come expecting a nice place to stay in Cortona and leave feeling like they’ve discovered something special. It’s the combination of authentic medieval atmosphere, genuinely peaceful surroundings, and that perfect location that keeps couples coming back. You’re close enough to explore all of Cortona’s attractions, but far enough from the main tourist flow to feel like you’ve found your own little corner of Tuscany. The free parking is just the practical cherry on top of what’s already a pretty perfect setup for exploring this part of Italy.
Tuscany hotels keep guests close to Chianti cellars, thermal springs, and frescoed chapels.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Way too many steps and very dark
What could be improved: The shower was a very tight space for us.
What could be improved: Unfortunately there was a bad smell of damp coming from the bathroom (mouldy plaster, needs extractor fan). Door has to be kept shut otherwise smell permeates everything. Don’t want to moan but would suggest adding a few things like: hangers in wardrobe, wine glasses, kettle, kitchen knife and a larger saucepan. Also a curtain is needed in the bedroom
What could be improved: Aircondition in one of the rooms didn’t work, but the host made arrangement to have it fixed, but we didn’t see it work before we left.
Absolutely recommend!
What could be improved: Nothing bad.
What could be improved: AC was very weak
Wonderful hosts, providing advice and service whilst also leaving space and privacy.
What could be improved: Loved everything except the mosquitoes, bring repellent lotion.
What could be improved: It would have been nice to have a curtain/ blind for the window to block out the light. It is very high up so no issue with privacy, just let's the light in on the morning.
