BORGO IN SAN ANGELO
Cortona, ItalyYou know what hits you first when you pull up to Borgo in San Angelo? The fact that you’re actually staying inside Cortona’s medieval walls – and I mean literally inside, not just “close to the historic center” like half the places claim. The entrance on via C:S:S.Angelo is tucked away in this narrow street that most tourists walk right past, which honestly makes it feel like you’ve discovered something special.
The whole place has this authentic Tuscan vibe that doesn’t feel forced or touristy. I mean, you’re in a restored borgo (that’s basically a small village compound), so the stone walls and arched doorways are the real deal, not some modern interpretation. The rooms vary quite a bit – some have these incredible valley views stretching toward Lake Trasimeno, while others look into the internal courtyard. Either way, you’re waking up to church bells from San Francesco just down the hill, which sounds romantic until you realize they start at 6 AM. Actually, you get used to it pretty quickly, and it becomes part of the whole experience.
What I really appreciate is how they’ve managed to blend historical character with modern comfort. The WiFi actually works (not always a given in these old stone buildings), and the bathrooms are properly updated without looking out of place. Parking can be a bit tricky since you’re right in the historic center – there’s limited space, so definitely mention if you’re bringing a car when you book. The staff genuinely knows the area well, too. They’ll point you toward the morning market in Piazza della Repubblica or suggest hiking trails that aren’t in the guidebooks. One evening, the guy at reception told me about this tiny enoteca around the corner where locals go for aperitivo – the kind of place you’d never find on your own. That 9.2 rating makes total sense when you experience little touches like that. Sure, it’s not cheap, but you’re paying for location and authenticity in one of Tuscany’s most perfectly preserved hill towns. If you’re the type who wants to step out your door and be immediately immersed in medieval streets, morning coffee at the local bar, and sunset views over the Val di Chiana, this is exactly what you’re looking for.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Way too many steps and very dark
What could be improved: The shower was a very tight space for us.
What could be improved: Unfortunately there was a bad smell of damp coming from the bathroom (mouldy plaster, needs extractor fan). Door has to be kept shut otherwise smell permeates everything. Don’t want to moan but would suggest adding a few things like: hangers in wardrobe, wine glasses, kettle, kitchen knife and a larger saucepan. Also a curtain is needed in the bedroom
What could be improved: Aircondition in one of the rooms didn’t work, but the host made arrangement to have it fixed, but we didn’t see it work before we left.
Absolutely recommend!
What could be improved: Nothing bad.
What could be improved: AC was very weak
Wonderful hosts, providing advice and service whilst also leaving space and privacy.
What could be improved: Loved everything except the mosquitoes, bring repellent lotion.
What could be improved: It would have been nice to have a curtain/ blind for the window to block out the light. It is very high up so no issue with privacy, just let's the light in on the morning.
