Villa Di Sotto
Villa a Sesta, ItalyYou know what really struck me about Villa Di Sotto? It’s tucked away in this tiny hamlet called Villa A Sesta that most people drive right past on their way to Siena – which is honestly exactly what you want. I mean, you’re getting that authentic Tuscan experience without the tour buses, and trust me, that matters more than you’d think.
The villa itself sits on Via S.Caterina, which is basically a quiet lane that winds through some of the most gorgeous countryside I’ve ever seen. When I pulled up (parking was easy, thank god – no circling around narrow medieval streets), my first thought was how the building just… belongs there. It’s this restored farmhouse that doesn’t try too hard to be fancy, but clearly someone put real thought into every detail. The morning light hits the stone walls just right, and you can actually hear the birds – not traffic, not construction, just birds and maybe the occasional tractor rumbling through the vineyards.
What I love about staying here is that you’re genuinely in wine country, not some tourist version of it. The Castello di Brolio is literally a ten-minute drive away, and honestly, some of the best wineries in Chianti Classico are practically neighbors. The staff – and I don’t usually go on about hotel staff, but these folks are different – they actually live in the area and know which enoteca in Castelnuovo Berardenga has the best selection, or where to get real pecorino that hasn’t been sitting around for tourists.
The rooms themselves feel like someone’s elegant country home, if that someone had impeccable taste and understood that travelers need good wifi and proper shower pressure. I stayed in one of the suites facing the valley, and honestly, I spent way too much time just sitting on the terrace with my morning coffee, watching the light change across the olive groves. The beds are seriously comfortable – none of that rock-hard European mattress nonsense – and the AC actually works, which you’ll appreciate if you’re visiting in July or August.
Here’s something I didn’t expect: the quiet. Not dead quiet, but that perfect countryside quiet where you hear crickets at night and church bells from the next village over. It’s about twenty minutes to Siena when you want city energy, but far enough away that you feel like you’ve escaped. The little restaurant in Villa A Sesta – just a five-minute walk – serves the kind of ribollita that makes you understand why people move to Tuscany and never leave.
Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places claiming to offer “authentic Tuscan charm,” and most of them are either trying too hard or charging you extra for everything. Villa Di Sotto gets it right – it’s refined without being stuffy, genuinely local without being inconvenient, and the kind of place where you start planning your next trip before you’ve even checked out. Plus, that 9.1 rating? Totally earned.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: No issues
What could be improved: Would have liked some fruit for breakfast
What could be improved: The wifi did not connect in the bedrooms. The TV could have been bigger as it was very small.
What could be improved: They are strict about checkout and use of amenities. When we checked out at 11AM we were hoping to stay to use the pool until we had to depart around 12. Since we were here for a wedding offsite, we hadn’t gotten a chance to use the amenities at all. However this was not allowed unless you stayed to pay for lunch.
Good restaurant services but also a private kitchen made cooking easy. Good breakfast, missed something fresh like fruits or vegetables but good option on sweet and salty breakfast.
Pools (public and private) were refreshing on hot summer days.
Short drive to visit beautiful places in the Toscana. Happy to visit again in the future!
What could be improved: our bed wasn’t the most comfortable however the rest of the property outweighed this.
What could be improved: bed linens would be nice if they were all white
