Villa Cicolina
Montepulciano, ItalyYou know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up Via Provinciale – it’s one of those winding roads that leads into Montepulciano where you’re honestly not sure if your GPS is taking you the right way. But then Villa Cicolina appears around this bend, and suddenly you get why people rave about this place (that 9.6 rating isn’t just for show).
The thing about this hotel is that it actually feels like you’re staying at someone’s incredibly stylish Tuscan home rather than some cookie-cutter property. I mean, the building itself has this worn-stone charm that you can’t fake – you can tell it’s been here for decades, maybe longer. The rooms have these thick walls that keep everything blissfully quiet, which is perfect because Montepulciano can get pretty lively during wine season. Speaking of wine, the staff here knows their stuff when it comes to local vineyards, and they’ll point you toward the smaller producers that most tourists miss completely. There’s this one cantina about ten minutes away that the front desk guy mentioned – honestly, it ended up being the highlight of my trip.
What really sets Villa Cicolina apart though is how it sits in relation to the town. You’re close enough to walk into the historic center (it’s maybe a 15-minute stroll through some genuinely gorgeous countryside), but far enough out that you’re not dealing with the crowds and tour buses that pile up around Piazza Grande during the day. The mornings are incredible – you wake up to this view over the Val d’Orcia that looks like someone painted it specifically for postcards. I found myself having coffee on my little balcony way longer than planned, just watching the light change over those rolling hills. The hotel has this pool area that’s perfectly positioned to catch the afternoon sun, and there’s something really satisfying about taking a dip after spending the day exploring the medieval streets. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven in Tuscany will appreciate – they’ve got their own lot, so you’re not circling around narrow stone streets looking for a spot. The only minor thing I’d mention is that dinner reservations in town fill up fast during summer, but the hotel staff will actually call ahead for you if you ask. It’s those little touches that make Villa Cicolina feel less like a business transaction and more like you’re being looked after by locals who genuinely want you to fall in love with their corner of Italy.
