Toscana Biovillage – Private Cottage
Cecina, ItalyLook, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Toscana Biovillage on Via Gorizia, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The name made it sound like some wellness retreat where they’d make you drink wheat grass, but it’s actually this charming little setup of private cottages tucked away in what feels like a proper Tuscan neighborhood. You’re right in Cecina, which honestly most people just drive through on their way to the coast, but that’s kind of the point – you get this authentic slice of Italian life without the tourist chaos.
The cottage itself surprised me. It’s not huge, but there’s something really satisfying about having your own little space with a proper kitchen and that terracotta tile flooring that stays cool even when it’s blazing outside. The owners clearly put thought into the details – I mean, they’ve got these wooden shutters that actually work (you know how rare that is?) and the bathroom has one of those rainfall showerheads that doesn’t just dribble water everywhere. What really sold me was stepping out onto the little patio in the morning with my coffee and realizing I could hear church bells from the centro storico mixing with the sounds of actual Italian families going about their day. No tour groups, no selfie sticks – just real life happening around you.
The location works better than you’d think. Sure, you’re not stumbling distance from the Duomo in Florence, but Cecina has this lived-in quality that’s actually refreshing. There’s a fantastic panetteria about a five-minute walk down Via Gorizia where the locals line up for their morning cornetti, and honestly, watching that daily ritual became part of my routine. You can drive to the coast in maybe ten minutes if you want to hit the beach, or head inland to explore those postcard-perfect hill towns that everyone talks about. The cottage has dedicated parking too, which – trust me – is worth its weight in gold when you’re trying to navigate Italian streets with a rental car. The 8.2 rating feels about right; it’s not luxury resort perfection, but it delivers on that increasingly rare promise of actually experiencing a place rather than just visiting it.

What could be improved: N/a
Very quiet and relaxing
What could be improved: The room was a bit outdated and not properly cleaned.
Tv was not working (they gave us some instruction to turn it on but did not work).
Breakfast is definitely not worth the money - there’s a set menu (including one choice of pastries, one toast, one yoghurt, one hot beverage and a glass of juice) and no variety.
Breakfast was very basic, but very tasty.
What could be improved: Very uncomfortable beds. You feel every movement of the other person, and the pillows were very basic/soft.
Private restaurant has strange operating policies, we could not eat dinner there on work days - I don't know why. We ended up having to go eat out.
What could be improved: Mozzies everywhere
What could be improved: The staff is unpleasant. Not hostile, arrogant. The receptionist was trying to be nice by having sassy comments, answering to our questions by implicating there are answers in the message they sent us (but they didn't). Hospitality failed.
What could be improved: It seemed like that the jacuzzi (in the bungalows) is included in the price before i booked. Only if you read through their whole webpage - you notice that using jacuzzi costs extra. I think that info should be written on the booking.com page aswell.
What could be improved: We would have loved to have basic things like sugar, salt and coffee in the kitchen, and a dishsoap to wash dishes without loading a full dishwasher.
Also the staff was not responsive on arrival, and when we had questions. the messages were read, but we received no response or acknowledgement. it felt a bit wierd to us.
What could be improved: A few bits “rough around the edges” - aircon kept cutting out, cracks in walls etc. Nothing awful but needs a bit of maintenance work. Also would have been nice to have a few essentials for cooking eg oil, salt/pepper, washing up liquid/cloths as we had to buy these
The ladies at the reception were very nice, and the bar personnel was very polite and attentive.
The location was very good, it was near a shopping area where you can find a supermarket as well as other stores.
The place was very quiet and we enjoyed staying there.
