Tornabuoni Suites Collection Residenza D’Epoca
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Tornabuoni Suites Collection, I wasn’t expecting much from the street entrance. Via de’ Tornabuoni is gorgeous, sure, but it’s also ridiculously touristy and crowded most of the day. But once you get past that unassuming door at number 9, you’re in for something actually special. This isn’t your typical Florence hotel experience – it’s more like staying in someone’s incredibly well-appointed apartment, assuming that someone has exquisite taste and unlimited funds.
The whole “Residenza D’Epoca” thing isn’t just fancy marketing speak here. You can feel the history in these walls, and I mean that in the best possible way. The suites are spacious (which, if you’ve stayed in European hotels before, you know is basically a miracle), and each one feels completely different. Mine had these massive windows that opened right onto the street, so you get the full Tornabuoni experience – the good and the slightly overwhelming. Pro tip: the street gets pretty lively until around 11 PM, especially during summer, but honestly? The people-watching is incredible. You’re literally in the heart of Florence’s luxury shopping district, so you’ll see everything from fashion buyers to tourists trying to navigate with massive suitcases.
What really got me was how the staff actually seemed to know the city. Not just the obvious stuff like “Duomo is that way,” but real recommendations. They told me about this tiny enoteca tucked behind Santa Maria Novella that I never would have found otherwise, and when I mentioned I was looking for good leather goods (because, you know, Florence), they steered me away from the tourist traps right outside the door toward some family-run places in Oltrarno. The check-in process was refreshingly smooth too – no standing around while they hunt for your reservation or try to upsell you on room upgrades. Everything just worked the way it should.
The location is sort of a double-edged sword, though. You’re literally steps from the Ponte Vecchio and maybe a five-minute walk to the Duomo, which is incredible. But you’re also right in the thick of tourist central, so getting a quiet coffee in the morning means walking a few blocks away from the main drag. The Santa Maria Novella train station is close enough that you can walk there with luggage, which saved me about 20 euros in taxi fare. Parking is basically impossible nearby – if you’re driving, definitely arrange something with the hotel beforehand.
What really sets this place apart is the attention to detail without being stuffy about it. The housekeeping was impeccable, the WiFi actually worked (not always a given in these historic buildings), and the beds were properly comfortable. You know what I mean – not just decent, but the kind where you actually sleep well instead of tossing around all night. For a 4-star place, it honestly feels like it’s punching above its weight class. That 9.2 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed there. It’s not perfect – the street noise thing is real, and breakfast options are limited – but it’s the kind of place that makes you want to come back to Florence just to stay there again.
