Sovana Hotel & Resort
Sovana, ItalyYou know what? I almost drove right past the Sovana Hotel & Resort because honestly, when you’re winding through these ancient Tuscan streets, you’re not really expecting to find a proper 4-star place tucked away in what feels like a medieval time capsule. But there it was on Via Del Duomo, looking like it belonged there all along β which, knowing Italian hospitality, it probably has in some form for decades.
The thing about Sovana is that most tourists barrel through Maremma on their way to more famous spots, but this little village is actually one of those hidden gems that locals from Pitigliano and even Grosseto folks drive out to visit on weekends. The hotel sits right in the heart of it all, and I mean right there β you can literally hear the church bells from the Duomo (hence the street name, obviously) and you’re a two-minute walk from those incredible Etruscan tombs that nobody talks about but absolutely should. The 9.1 rating makes total sense once you’re there because the staff actually seems to give a damn, which isn’t always a given in smaller Italian hotels, if I’m being honest.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to blend modern comfort with the medieval vibe without making it feel like some cheesy theme park situation. The rooms have that solid, stone-wall feel you want in a place like this, but the beds are actually comfortable and the Wi-Fi works β small miracles when you’re in rural Tuscany. The resort part might sound fancy, but it’s more like they’ve created these lovely common spaces where you can sit with a glass of local Morellino and watch the world go by at the proper Italian pace. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven through these hill towns will appreciate. I stayed in early October when the summer crowds had thinned out but the weather was still perfect, and honestly, the whole place felt like you were staying in someone’s well-appointed country house rather than a hotel. The breakfast β well, let’s just say they know their way around proper Italian coffee and local pastries, and they’re not stingy about either. If you’re planning to explore the Vie Cave or do any of the archaeological sites nearby, this is probably the most civilized base you’re going to find, and the staff actually knows the area well enough to give you real recommendations instead of just pointing you toward the same three tourist traps everyone else suggests.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: I wish we could have stayed there longer and played with the owner's pet chihuhua!
What could be improved: Maybe a bit pricey for an off-season stay. But if this is what it takes to support this hotel through the winter months, Iβm happy to do it.
What could be improved: Nothing!
What could be improved: Wifi not good.
What could be improved: It could have had more furniture in the room. A coffee table in front of the sofa would have been nice.
The village is perfect to enjoy Toscana without crowds of tourists. Great with Children.
Everything is just fantastic there. From room to pool
