Casa Gaeta 2 appartamenti
Pitigliano, ItalyYou know, I stumbled across Casa Gaeta 2 while wandering through Pitigliano’s medieval streets last spring, and honestly, I almost walked right past it. The entrance on Vicolo Gaeta is tucked away in this narrow little alley that feels like something out of a fairy tale – you’re literally steps from the ancient Etruscan caves carved into the tufa rock that Pitigliano is famous for. The building itself has that weathered stone look that screams “I’ve been here for centuries,” but once you’re inside, it’s actually quite modern and comfortable. I mean, you’re getting proper apartments here, not just hotel rooms, which is perfect if you’re planning to stay more than a night or two and want to feel like you’re actually living in this incredible hilltop town.
What really struck me about this place is how it sits right in the heart of the Jewish quarter – well, what used to be the Jewish quarter before WWII. You can walk to the old synagogue in about two minutes, and the view from some of the windows looks out over the Lente valley where you can see the Vie Cave (those mysterious Etruscan roads) cutting through the countryside. The owner clearly knows what travelers actually need – there’s decent Wi-Fi, which can be hit or miss in these old Italian towns, and the kitchenettes are properly equipped, not like those sad little setups you sometimes get where you can barely make coffee. Parking can be a bit tricky since you’re in the historic center, but there’s a spot just outside the old town walls where you can leave your car and walk in through the Porta di Sovana.
The 8.3 rating makes total sense to me because while it’s not luxury in the traditional sense, it’s authentic in a way that most travelers are actually looking for. You’ll hear church bells throughout the day and maybe some chatter from the piazza in the evening, but it quiets down pretty early – this isn’t exactly a party town. What I loved most was being able to grab fresh bread from the bakery on Via Zuccarelli first thing in the morning, then come back to make proper Italian coffee in my own kitchen while planning which Etruscan tomb to explore that day. The whole experience felt less like staying in a hotel and more like borrowing a friend’s apartment in one of Tuscany’s most underrated gems. Plus, you’re only about 30 minutes from Sorano and Sovana if you want to do the whole “città del tufo” circuit, and the thermal baths at Saturnia are close enough for an evening soak after a day of exploring.
