Salvadonica
San Casciano in Val di Pesa, ItalyLook, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Tuscany over the years, but Salvadonica just gets it right in ways that honestly surprised me. It’s tucked away on Via Grevigiana – which, fair warning, is one of those winding Tuscan roads where you’ll question your GPS at least twice – but once you pull through those gates, you immediately understand why they chose this spot. The whole place feels like someone’s elegant country estate that just happens to take guests, if that makes sense.
What really struck me was how they’ve managed to keep that authentic villa feel without making you feel like you’re roughing it. The rooms have this perfect balance of rustic charm and modern comfort – think exposed beams and terracotta floors, but with excellent Wi-Fi and bathrooms that actually work properly (you’d be surprised how rare that combo is in restored Italian properties). The breakfast spread is legitimately impressive too, with local pecorino and prosciutto that’s clearly sourced from nearby farms, not some generic hotel supplier. I mean, you’re only about 20 minutes from Florence, but you feel completely removed from all that tourist chaos.
The staff here actually knows the area – not just the obvious stuff like “go to the Uffizi,” but real recommendations. They pointed me toward this tiny enoteca in Greve that I never would have found otherwise, and gave me detailed directions to some hiking trails that weren’t overrun with tour groups. The pool area is where I spent most of my afternoons, honestly – it’s got these incredible views over the vineyards, and there’s something about the way the light hits the cypress trees around sunset that just makes you want to order another glass of Chianti and stay put. Parking is easy (always a relief in Italy), and the whole property is quiet enough that you can actually hear the birds in the morning instead of traffic noise.
The location is sort of perfect if you want to explore the region without dealing with Florence crowds every day. You’re right in the heart of Chianti wine country – seriously, you can walk to a couple of wineries – but San Casciano has enough restaurants and shops that you don’t feel completely isolated. I will say, having a car is pretty essential unless you’re planning to just stay put and relax, which honestly wouldn’t be the worst thing. The whole experience feels more like visiting sophisticated friends in the countryside than staying at a hotel, and with a 9.3 rating, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks they’ve nailed that balance.

The calm and views from the hotel grounds
Location is close enough to Florence when you want more action or city life
What could be improved: This is the first time we have been underwhlemed with the restaurant. Quality of food and especially the service have dropped significantly. I hope steps will be taken to correct and improve it as we have always had good meals and service in the past.
The hairdryer isn’t the best- it shuts down after very few minutes and not apt for styling
What could be improved: N/a
What could be improved: We will revisit as it is so convenient for Florence airport. The next time we will upgrade to a larger room.
The pool was a real bonus with the hot weather, and the views are just unbeatable. We ate at the on site restaurant all three nights. It is on the pricier side but absolutely worth it for the quality, service, and setting.
We also took part in the watercolor painting class and a wine tasting. Just two of the many great activity options available. There’s truly something for everyone here. We can’t recommend it enough!
What could be improved: Small things like the pool service was a bit slow. Our room could hear the sound of water dripping for most of the night which was a little annoying
What really impressed us, though, was how family-friendly the hotel is. While we enjoyed the wine, the kids had space to play safely, and the staff went out of their way to make them feel special.
Our room was spacious and clean! The food at the restaurant was outstanding!
Highly recommended for couples, families, or anyone looking to soak up the best of Tuscany.
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: none.
What could be improved: I don’t have anything bad to say about it.
The sunsets here are nothing short of mesmerizing, painting the sky in hues of gold and amber as the day melts away. Whether enjoyed from the garden, the poolside, or a quiet corner with nothing but the sound of nature, each evening feels like a masterpiece unfolding before your eyes.
The property itself is a perfect marriage of tradition and elegance, with tastefully decorated rooms that embrace Tuscan heritage—exposed wooden beams, warm earth tones, and inviting furnishings create a space that is both stylish and deeply comforting. Every detail has been curated with care, ensuring a stay that feels indulgent yet effortlessly welcoming.
Dining at Salvadonica is an experience in itself. The food is a celebration of authentic Tuscan flavors, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. From delicate homemade pasta to rich, flavorful meats and seasonal vegetables, each dish is a reminder of why Italian cuisine is revered worldwide. The morning breakfasts, enjoyed against the backdrop of the countryside, make for a perfect start to the day.
