Viareggio Suite – Sea view apartment
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places along the Tuscan coast, but this little spot on Traversa a Mare actually surprised me. The Viareggio Suite sits right where you want to be – close enough to hear the waves but tucked away from the main promenade chaos. You know what I mean about Viareggio in summer, right? It gets pretty intense down by the bagni (those beach clubs), but this street feels more like where locals might actually live.
The apartment itself is honestly better than the photos suggest. The sea view isn’t some distant glimpse – you’re looking straight out at the Tyrrhenian, and on clear mornings you can actually make out the Apuan Alps behind you if you crane your neck from the balcony. The whole place has this lived-in elegance that’s hard to fake. I mean, the furniture isn’t trying too hard to be trendy, but everything works and feels comfortable. The kitchen’s properly equipped too, which matters if you hit the morning market near the train station (it’s about a 10-minute walk, totally doable). The bathroom’s modern without being sterile – good water pressure, which you can’t take for granted in older Italian buildings.
What really sold me on this place was the neighborhood vibe. Traversa a Mare connects to the main seafront, but it’s got this residential feel where you’ll see Italian families heading to the beach with their kids, not just tourists. There’s a decent café right at the corner where the owner – this guy named Marco – makes proper espresso and remembers your order after two days. The whole Fabio Romani area is sort of Viareggio’s sweet spot: you’re walking distance from the pier and those famous Art Nouveau buildings, but you’re not dealing with the cruise ship crowds that pile into the town center. Parking can be tricky in peak season (July-August gets brutal), but the host actually helps coordinate street parking, which is more than most places offer. Evening wise, you get these amazing sunsets right from your window, and the sound of the waves is just constant enough to be soothing without keeping you awake. I stayed in September and it was perfect – still warm for swimming, but the summer madness had died down. Honestly, with a 9.6 rating, I expected maybe some overhyped Instagram trap, but this feels like someone’s actually nice apartment that they happen to rent out. That’s rarer than you’d think these days.
