Rustico del Chiasso
Capannori, ItalyLook, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Rustico del Chiasso on Via del Chiasso, I wasn’t expecting much from the outside. The street’s pretty narrow (like most in this part of Capannori), and you might actually drive past it if you’re not paying attention. But once you step inside, it’s like someone took all the best parts of staying at your Italian grandmother’s house and polished them up just enough to make you feel fancy.
The whole place has this authentic Tuscan thing going on, but not in that over-the-top way where everything’s covered in fake aging and plastic grapes. I mean, the stone walls actually look like they’ve been there for centuries, and the wooden beams have that genuine patina you can’t fake. What really got me was the breakfast room – they’ve got these huge windows that catch the morning light perfectly, and you can actually hear the church bells from San Pietro a Vico drifting over while you’re having your cappuccino. The staff knows their stuff too, which honestly isn’t always a given in smaller places like this. They’ll tell you exactly when to hit the market in Capannori centro (Thursday mornings, by the way) and which back roads to take if you’re heading to Lucca and want to avoid the tourist traffic.
The rooms themselves are what you’d hope for – comfortable beds, decent bathrooms, and thank god, proper air conditioning because summers here can be brutal. My room overlooked this little courtyard where they grow actual herbs for the kitchen, and I loved that you could smell the rosemary and basil wafting up in the evenings. Parking’s included, which is huge if you’re driving around this area – trust me, you don’t want to be hunting for street parking in these medieval town centers. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the Wi-Fi can be a bit spotty in some rooms, but honestly, when you’re surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, checking emails feels pretty pointless anyway. What really sets this place apart is its location – you’re close enough to Lucca (maybe 15 minutes by car) to easily explore the city walls and that amazing Saturday market, but far enough out to feel like you’re actually experiencing rural Tuscany. The owners clearly put thought into maintaining that 9.1 rating, and it shows in all the little touches that make you want to extend your stay.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Niets.
De gastheer en gastvrouw zijn zeer vriendelijk en behulpzaam, maar niet nadrukkelijk aanwezig wat wij heel fijn vonden.
What could be improved: De bedden zijn wat minder van kwaliteit.
- nice owners, everythings prepared with love, well maintained
- fair price
- owners are almost unvisible but care for everything
- landscape around is great, good place for visitting cities around
What could be improved: - inside it‘s a bit grandparents style. But lovely at all
What could be improved: Nulla
What could be improved: De stoelen bij de eettafel zaten minder fijn maar dat was dan ook het enige
The grounds the apartment is on are very nice, well looked after and there's nothing you need. I scratched the rental car ever so slightly, and Lorenzo even had scratch remover to give us to help remove the scratch. At certain times in the day, all you can hear is silence, very relaxing. 5* all round.
What could be improved: Nothing to mention here - everything was great.
What could be improved: you need a car to stay here. no bath
