Best Western Grand Hotel Guinigi
You know what struck me first about the Best Western Grand Hotel Guinigi? The location is honestly perfect if you actually want to experience Lucca without being trapped inside the medieval walls with all the tour groups. It sits on Via Romana, which sounds fancy but is really just the main road heading south from the city center – close enough that you can walk to Porta San Pietro in maybe ten minutes, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with the constant buzz of Vespas and gelato-seeking tourists at all hours.
The hotel itself feels like someone took a solid business hotel and gave it some Italian personality without going overboard. I mean, it’s still a Best Western, so don’t expect boutique charm, but the lobby has this warm, lived-in feel with marble floors that actually look good rather than trying too hard. The staff genuinely seems to know the area – when I asked about parking (which, let’s be honest, is crucial in Lucca), they didn’t just point to some expensive garage but told me about the free spots along Via Romana if you don’t mind a short walk. Speaking of parking, there’s a small lot behind the hotel, but it fills up fast during peak season.
The rooms are what you’d expect from a well-run four-star place – clean, comfortable beds, decent bathrooms with those rainfall showerheads that actually work. Nothing revolutionary, but honestly refreshing after some of the “charming” places I’ve stayed in Tuscany where charm apparently means questionable plumbing. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. Via Romana has some traffic during the day, but it dies down completely after dinner, which is more than I can say for hotels near Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. The breakfast spread is solid too – proper Italian coffee (not that awful American-style stuff some international chains serve), fresh pastries, and they actually have real Parmigiano-Reggiano, not some generic cheese labeled as parmesan.
Here’s the thing about staying here – you’re positioned perfectly for exploring beyond just Lucca’s walls. The train station is a fifteen-minute walk if you want to day-trip to Florence or Pisa, and if you’re driving, you can actually get out of the city center without wanting to tear your hair out. I watched so many people struggle with their rental cars trying to navigate the narrow streets near the duomo, while I just strolled back to Via Romana with my shopping bags and called it a day. The hotel sits near some genuinely good local restaurants too – there’s this little osteria about five minutes away that serves the best tortelli lucchesi I had during my entire stay, and the hotel staff will absolutely point you toward places like that instead of the tourist traps.

Guest Reviews
Staff coped well with catering for nut and gluten allergies in our group.
And that 100% blood-orange juice for breakfast for mind-blowing!
The property is dated but very well maintained. The staff very helpful and friendly. Free parking faculty.
Perfect hotel to base in northern Tuscany for traveling in groups or family.
