Rivo della Corte
Pistoia, ItalyYou know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Tuscany, but Rivo della Corte in Pistoia honestly surprised me. It’s tucked away on Via di Groppoli – this quiet residential street that most tourists never find because, well, they’re all rushing off to Florence or Pisa. But that’s exactly why this place works so well. The building itself has this understated elegance that feels authentically Italian rather than trying too hard to be a “boutique experience.” When I walked in, the lobby had that perfect balance of formal and welcoming – marble floors that weren’t too shiny, and staff who actually remembered my name by the second day.
The rooms are what really got me though. I mean, sure, it’s a 4-star place so you expect nice things, but there’s something about how they’ve done the details. The bathroom tiles felt substantial under your feet, not like those thin modern ones that echo everywhere. And the beds – honestly, I’m picky about mattresses, but I slept better there than I had in weeks. The windows are properly soundproofed too, which matters because even though Groppoli is quiet, there’s still the occasional Vespa buzzing by in the morning. What I loved most was how they’d positioned the reading chair by the window so you could actually watch the street life below while having your morning coffee. Little things like that tell you someone who understands travel designed these spaces.
Pistoia itself is sort of this hidden gem that locals from Florence escape to on weekends – it’s got all the medieval architecture and great food without the crowds. From Rivo della Corte, you can walk to the main piazza in maybe eight minutes, and there’s this incredible gelato place (I think it’s called Gelateria Peppino) just around the corner that the concierge told me about. The hotel sits in what feels like a real neighborhood where you’ll see Italian families doing their evening passeggiata, not just tourist groups following umbrella-wielding guides. Parking can be a bit tricky in the area – the streets are narrow and locals know all the good spots – but the hotel actually has a small garage that they don’t advertise much. Just ask when you book. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the elevators are typically Italian-sized (read: cozy), but honestly, after a day of walking around Pistoia’s cobblestone streets, I was usually happy to take the stairs anyway. With a 9.5 rating, this place clearly knows what it’s doing, and staying here felt like discovering a local secret rather than just checking another hotel off the list.

What could be improved: Access road in is very narrow country lane…. We did not want to be driving back at night after being out so scheduled early dinners in town. A bit far from Pistoia
What could be improved: Only slight minus was there were no options to get hot/cold drinks after breakfast. Small fridge in the room but only enough to keep small water. It was beautiful so wanted to stay around all day but as it was so hot we had to go out in the afternoon to get cold drinks. Not a negative just would have been a bonus
What could be improved: The breakfast was so fresh and organic. Slyvia made the nicest cakes. The family that run the farm house are so organised, friendly and they are such good hostess.
The beautiful setting and the rooms were decorated with such thought and to a high quality and standard.
The breakfast was incredible! A great selection of things, with homemade honey, olive oil, home grown tomato's on offer. A lovely touch.
