You know what hit me first when I pulled up to this place on Via Poggio alla Guardia? The silence. I mean, you’re still technically in Montecatini Terme, but it’s like someone hit the mute button on all the usual tourist chaos down in the town center. The villa sits on this little hill – poggio literally means hilltop, which makes perfect sense once you’re there – and honestly, the setting alone is worth the splurge.

The heated pool is absolutely the star here, and I’m not just saying that because I’m a pool person. It’s one of those infinity-edge situations that makes you feel like you’re swimming into the Tuscan countryside. The water temperature was perfect even in late September when the evenings were getting crisp, and there’s something magical about floating there at dusk with the thermal town’s lights starting to twinkle below. The pool area has these comfortable loungers that actually stay put when you adjust them (you know how annoying wobbly pool furniture can be), and there’s enough space that you never feel crowded even when other guests are around.

What really sets this place apart though is how it manages to feel both luxurious and livable. The interiors have that effortless Italian elegance – think natural stone, warm woods, and those gorgeous terracotta tiles that stay cool underfoot even on hot days. The kitchen is properly equipped if you want to cook with ingredients from the Saturday market in town, but honestly, you’re close enough to some fantastic restaurants that you might not bother. Il Santellone is maybe a ten-minute walk down the hill, and their wild boar ragu is ridiculous. The staff mentioned that most guests end up at the thermal baths at least once – Montecatini’s famous for them, obviously – and it’s an easy stroll down Via Poggio alla Guardia to connect with the main pedestrian areas.

Parking’s no issue here, which is actually a big deal in this part of Italy where you’re often circling narrow streets looking for a spot. The villa has its own area, and you can come and go without that whole ordeal. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – none of that overly formal hotel reception desk experience, more like being welcomed into someone’s (very nice) home. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the property, including poolside, which matters more than it probably should. I did notice that sound carries a bit between the outdoor areas and some of the rooms, so if you’re planning late-night pool sessions, just keep that in mind. But honestly, the whole vibe is pretty mellow anyway – this isn’t a party destination, it’s more about unwinding and soaking up that particular kind of Italian tranquility that’s getting harder to find.
