Residence Domus
Pisa, ItalyLook, I’ve stayed at my fair share of places in Pisa, and honestly, most tourists just crash near the train station and call it a day. But Residence Domus on Via la Tinta? This is where you want to be if you actually want to feel like you’re living in the city, not just visiting it.
The thing that struck me right away was how quiet this street is – I mean, you’re literally a ten-minute walk from the Leaning Tower madness, but Via la Tinta feels like a different world entirely. It’s this narrow residential street where you’ll hear actual Pisans going about their daily lives, not tour groups shuffling by at 7 AM. The building itself has that solid, understated elegance that Italian hotels do so well when they’re not trying too hard. Nothing flashy, just… right, you know? The front desk staff actually remembered my name by day two, which doesn’t happen often at four-star places.
What really won me over was the attention to details that matter when you’re staying somewhere for more than just a night. The rooms are spacious – and I mean actually spacious, not “European spacious” – with these gorgeous high ceilings that keep everything cool even in summer. The beds are properly firm (thank god), and there’s enough closet space that I didn’t have to live out of my suitcase. But here’s the kicker: the kitchenette setup is legit. I’m talking full-sized fridge, decent stovetop, actual counter space. Perfect for when you hit up the morning market at Piazza delle Vettovaglie and want to make a proper breakfast instead of paying fifteen euros for hotel croissants.
The neighborhood is what really makes this place special though. You’re tucked into this residential pocket between the river and the university area, so there’s always this gentle buzz of student life without the chaos. That little osteria around the corner – I think it’s called Da Bruno – serves the best cacio e pepe I had in all of Tuscany, and the owner will absolutely lecture you about wine if you let him (in the best possible way). Walking to the Arno takes maybe five minutes, and once you’re there, you’ve got this perfect evening stroll along the water with views that’ll make you forget why you came to see that tilted tower in the first place.
I’ll be honest, the only thing that bugged me was the WiFi could be spotty in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, but that’s pretty much standard for this part of Italy. And if you’re driving, parking can be a bit of a puzzle – though the staff will sort you out with a spot nearby if you ask nicely. The 8.8 rating makes total sense to me because this isn’t about luxury amenities or Instagram-worthy lobbies. It’s about nailing the fundamentals while giving you a genuine slice of what living in Pisa actually feels like. You’ll leave feeling like you discovered something, not just stayed somewhere.

What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: no heater control (Pisa city mandate for post-April!), very few or no sockets in kitchen/dining/desk area, slippery bathroom floor, odd folding glass doors for shower, some fixtures loose and need repair
What could be improved: All good!
It is situated in a very central part of town, close to the river Arno and within easy walking distance of the Tower.
There are good restaurants and cafes nearby.
