Relais Villa Belpoggio – Residenza D’Epoca
Loro Ciuffenna, ItalyLook, I’ll be honest – I almost drove right past this place on Via Setteponti Ponente because it doesn’t scream “hotel” from the street. It’s tucked into what looks like a residential area in Loro Ciuffenna, and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it special. The building itself is this gorgeous old villa that’s been converted into a residenza d’epoca, which basically means they’ve kept all the character while making it actually livable for modern travelers. You know what struck me first? The silence. I mean, you’re still close enough to hear life happening in the village, but there’s this peaceful quality that you just don’t get at those big chain places in Florence or Siena.
The rooms – well, they’re what you’d expect from a place that scores 9.4 out of 10, but it’s the details that got me. Real wooden shutters that actually block out the morning sun (crucial if you’re one of those people who needs darkness to sleep), and the kind of thick stone walls that keep things cool even in August. The owner clearly gets that travelers want authenticity without sacrificing comfort – there’s modern plumbing and reliable WiFi, but you’re sleeping in a space that has actual history. The breakfast situation is refreshingly straightforward too; local stuff, good coffee, and they don’t make you feel rushed if you want to linger over your cappuccino while planning your day.
What really makes this place work is its location in the Valdarno area. You’re about 40 minutes from Florence if you want to do the tourist thing, but honestly, some of my best days were just exploring the smaller hill towns around here. The staff actually knows the area – like, really knows it – so when they suggest a trattoria or a hiking trail, you can trust them. Parking isn’t a nightmare like it is in the bigger towns, and you can actually use this as a base to explore without feeling like you’re missing out on the “real” Tuscany. I stayed here in late spring when the weather was perfect for having morning coffee on the terrace, and I can see why people come back year after year. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying at a well-connected friend’s restored villa rather than just another hotel room.

And the staff - Tania and Agnese were wonderful! They were both fun, helpful, and gave us plenty of advice on how to spend our time and to ensure we enjoyed our stay. They booked restaurants and tours for us, that we loved and would have had no idea about or ability to book otherwsise. Thanks you Tania and Agnese.
The whole are of Loro Ciufenna and Castelfranco were quaint and peaceful, and Tania and Agnese helped us find suitable restaurants and facilities to compliment our stay.
What could be improved: Literally nothing. Was perfect.
What could be improved: that I had to leave this amazing, relaxing place and such kind-hearted people :)
What could be improved: Nothing really to criticise about the villa, but staying in Tuscany requires a car and someone always needs to be the designated driver which limits its appeal as a food/wine destination. You have to drive to everything. Forget organising taxis. They are virtually non existent.
Also be aware that the villa does a basic continental breakfast and decent coffee, but that’s about it as far as an onsite restaurant is concerned.
One suggestion I’d make to the villa is buy an iron and ironing board. It’d cost €100 and it’s absurd that the villa provides no ability to press anything!
We traveled with our 10 mo old and 2 year old. The staff were so sweet with our children and the space was accommodating. We stayed in the apartment which they set up an infant pack n' play for us.
The breakfast the staff provides in the morning is exceptional. The lunch you can order was also amazing. We did not book our stay long enough!
What could be improved: Due to reservation issue, had to move to another room for last night.
What could be improved: Nothing
