Relais CastelBigozzi

You know what struck me first about Relais CastelBigozzi? The silence. I mean, complete, almost unsettling quiet when you step out of your car – which, by the way, you’ll definitely need since this place sits in the countryside between Monteriggioni and Strove. It’s one of those converted farmhouses that actually feels authentic, not like someone just slapped some rustic décor on a modern building and called it Tuscan.

The location is honestly perfect if you’re trying to avoid the tourist madness of central Tuscany but still want to be close enough to hit the major spots. Monteriggioni’s medieval walls are maybe a ten-minute drive, and you can reach Siena in about twenty minutes – though honestly, after spending an evening on their terrace watching the sunset over the rolling hills, you might not want to leave at all. The property itself feels like it’s been here forever, with that weathered stone and those massive wooden beams that probably came from trees that were ancient when Dante was still writing. They’ve clearly put money into renovating it properly – the bathrooms are actually modern and the air conditioning works (crucial in July, trust me) – but they didn’t mess with the character.

What really sets this place apart is the staff’s approach. Check-in felt more like being welcomed into someone’s home than a hotel transaction, and they seem to genuinely know the area. When I asked about restaurants, they didn’t just hand me a generic list – they asked what I was in the mood for and gave me specific recommendations based on what was actually good that week. The restaurant on-site is solid too, though I’d suggest eating there maybe once and then exploring the tiny trattorias they’ll point you toward in the surrounding villages. The pool area is where you’ll probably spend most of your downtime – it’s got that infinity edge thing going on, but it doesn’t feel pretentious because the view is legitimately stunning. Just endless green hills dotted with cypress trees and the occasional farmhouse. I actually spent more time there than I planned because it’s surprisingly peaceful, even when other guests are around.

The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a well-done agriturismo conversion – exposed beams, tile floors, and windows that actually open (shocking, I know). Some face the courtyard, others look out over the countryside. If you’re booking, try to get one of the hillside rooms – the extra cost is worth it for that view, especially at sunrise when everything’s golden and misty. The 8.9 rating makes sense when you consider it’s not trying to be a luxury resort but rather a comfortable base for exploring this part of Tuscany. It’s the kind of place where you can roll back in dusty from a day of wine tasting, clean up, and feel civilized again without any pretension or fuss.

It was exactly what was promised. An old building in the heart of Tuscany int the middle of an olive orchard. Unfortunately we only spent a night there and wished we could have stayed longer. The restaurant was also very nice with a nice view of the sunset over the hills. The rooms are extremely spacious, clean and beautiful. Overall, we would come back at anytime in a heartbeat

Wonderful Tuscan historic property with beautiful views and a near perfect renovation with stunning pool and first class restaurant. Perfect example of Tuscan chic. Understated luxury. Also ideally situated next to Vis Francigena for waking to Sienna or other towns.
