Hotel Bologna
So I’ve stayed at Hotel Bologna a few times now, and honestly, it’s one of those places that just gets it right without trying too hard. The location on Via Mazzini is actually perfect – you’re right in the heart of Pisa but not dealing with the tourist chaos around the tower. I mean, you can walk to the Leaning Tower in about 15 minutes, but you’re far enough away that you won’t hear tour groups at 7 AM.
The building itself has this understated Italian elegance thing going on. It’s not flashy, but when you walk into the lobby, there’s this immediate sense of calm with the marble floors and subtle lighting. The staff actually remembers you if you’ve been there before, which is rare these days. Check-in is usually smooth, though I’d avoid arriving during the late afternoon rush if possible – that’s when the business travelers tend to descend. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star: comfortable beds (they use good linens, not the scratchy stuff), decent-sized bathrooms, and air conditioning that actually works during those brutal Tuscan summers. I particularly like the rooms facing the courtyard – they’re quieter and you get this nice morning light without the street noise from Via Mazzini.
What really sets this place apart is the breakfast situation. They do this proper Italian spread with local pastries and actually good coffee (not the watery hotel stuff you sometimes get). The dining area gets busy around 8:30, so if you’re an early riser, you’ll have the place mostly to yourself. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle – there’s a garage nearby, but honestly, if you’re planning to explore Pisa on foot, you might want to park once and forget about the car. The train station is maybe a 20-minute walk, so you can easily hop over to Florence or Cinque Terre for day trips. The neighborhood itself is pretty authentic – there’s this little alimentari around the corner where locals actually shop, and a couple of trattorias that don’t feel like tourist traps. You know what I really appreciate? The hotel doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s not boutique-y or trendy, just professionally run and comfortable. The Wi-Fi works, the shower pressure is decent, and the whole place feels clean without that sterile chain hotel vibe. For the price point, especially considering you’re in central Pisa, it’s honestly solid value. I’d definitely stay here again, particularly if I was doing business in town or wanted a reliable base for exploring Tuscany without the premium you’d pay closer to the main tourist sites.
