Podere Mezzastrada – Place of Charme
Certaldo, ItalyYou know what? I’ve driven past this place on Via Strada dozens of times heading to Florence, and I always wondered about that beautiful stone building tucked behind the cypress trees. Well, I finally stayed at Podere Mezzastrada last spring, and honestly – it’s one of those finds that makes you feel like you discovered something special before everyone else catches on.
The whole property feels like stepping into someone’s elegant country home, which I mean, it sort of is. The owners have this knack for making a 4-star place feel intimate rather than stuffy. My room had these gorgeous exposed beams (the real deal, not fake rustic nonsense) and windows that opened onto rolling hills dotted with olive groves. There’s something about waking up to that view with actual birdsong – not traffic noise – that just resets your brain. The breakfast spread is fantastic too, with local honey that I’m pretty sure comes from somewhere within walking distance and the kind of fresh bread that makes you understand why Italians are so particular about their food. Actually, the whole dining situation surprised me. They source everything locally, and you can taste the difference.
What really sets this place apart is the location – you’re in proper Tuscan countryside, about twenty minutes from Fiano’s center, but close enough to hop over to San Gimignano or even make a day trip to Siena without feeling rushed. The staff (there’s this wonderful woman at reception who knows every hiking trail within a 10-mile radius) genuinely love the area and will point you toward the good stuff locals actually go to, not just tourist traps. Parking is easy – there’s a proper lot, not street scrambling – and the whole place has this peaceful energy that makes you want to slow down and actually relax. I stayed in May when everything was green and blooming, but I imagine it’s gorgeous year-round. The only minor thing? The WiFi can be spotty in some rooms, but honestly, that might be a blessing in disguise. This is the kind of place where you should probably put your phone down anyway and just enjoy being in one of the most beautiful corners of Italy.

Guest Reviews
Very comfortable bed, pristine white towels & bed linen , well equipped kitchen and own bbq ! Everything you could need for comfortable stay in the Chianti region.
What could be improved: Only negative no lights at night from parking to entering the buildings.
What could be improved: some areas need a little tlc but with that being said we had a really nice week
Picking up the key from an other place which was a bit inconvenient. We were okay with that.
But if they could set up a reception or even a staff for looking after the apartment for any emergency that would be great! We had called them about some glitches and they sent a maintenance to fix next day. Good service .
Unfortunately the pool was closed we would try next time.
Rarely does a holiday destination immediately exceed your expectations quite so quickly - we are delighted to have discovered this hidden gem and I know that my wife and I will return.
10/10 from us - book with total confidence. 2 adult travellers aged 58 and 55. British but living in France since 2018.
