Podere Vigliano
Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, ItalyYou know that feeling when you stumble across a place that’s somehow both rustic and refined? That’s exactly what happened when I first pulled up the gravel drive to Podere Vigliano. This isn’t your typical Tuscan agriturismo – I mean, it technically is one, but it’s been done with such attention to detail that it feels more like staying at a very sophisticated friend’s country estate.
The location on Strada Di Magliano is pretty perfect, actually. You’re tucked away enough to feel like you’ve escaped everything (the silence at night is almost startling if you’re used to city noise), but Tavarnelle’s center is just a few minutes down the hill when you need supplies or want to grab coffee with the locals at Bar Centrale. What really struck me was how the owners have managed to preserve the authentic farmhouse character – we’re talking original stone walls and weathered wooden beams – while sneaking in modern luxuries that don’t feel out of place. The bathrooms, for instance, are absolutely gorgeous with their travertine tiles, but they still have that rustic warmth you want in Tuscany.
I stayed here during late September, which honestly might be the sweet spot – the summer crowds have thinned out but the weather’s still warm enough to enjoy the terrace with a glass of wine (they produce their own, and it’s genuinely good, not just tourist-friendly). The staff has this wonderful way of being attentive without hovering, and they actually know the area well enough to point you toward hidden gems. They steered me toward this tiny osteria in nearby Barberino that I never would have found otherwise. The rooms themselves are spacious – mine had views over the olive groves that literally made me stop unpacking just to stare – and the beds are the kind you sink into after a day of walking around Florence (which is maybe 45 minutes away, depending on traffic through the Chianti hills). One small thing that impressed me: the WiFi actually works well throughout the property, which isn’t always a given in these converted farmhouses. The 9.8 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s the kind of place where everything just works, from the seamless check-in to the breakfast spread that features local products without making a huge deal about it. Sure, you’ll pay a bit more than some places in the area, but honestly? The combination of authentic Tuscan atmosphere with genuine comfort is rare enough that it’s worth it.

What could be improved: It was perfect ....nothing that we did not like
What could be improved: We could have done with mosquito nets on windows and our kitchen lounge was extremely hot.
What could be improved: I would have preferred the option of doing my own laundry. It was hard to keep water inside the shower, with only a shower curtain and a very small shower. So, we had to mop up water after each shower. Pool towels would have been great.
