Palace Hotel
Viareggio, ItalyYou know, I’ve walked past the Palace Hotel dozens of times on Via Flavio Gioia, and honestly, I always wondered what it was like inside. Well, I finally stayed there last month and – I mean, the name had me worried it might be one of those stuffy, over-the-top places, but it’s actually got this really nice balance going on. The building itself has that classic Italian elegance without being intimidating, if that makes sense.
What really got me was the location. I’m talking a two-minute walk to the beach here, and not just any stretch of sand – you’re right near the good part of Viareggio’s coastline where the water’s actually clean and the beach clubs aren’t completely overrun with tourists. The staff mentioned they get a lot of regulars who’ve been coming back for years, which honestly makes sense once you settle in. The rooms are properly comfortable (I had one facing the street, which was fine – Via Flavio Gioia isn’t exactly a highway), and there’s this attention to detail that you notice after a day or two. Like, the shower pressure is actually good, the air conditioning works without sounding like a jet engine, and someone clearly thought about where to put the outlets.
Here’s what I really appreciated though – the front desk folks actually know Viareggio. When I asked about dinner recommendations, they didn’t just hand me a generic list; they asked what I was in the mood for and sent me to this little trattoria three blocks inland that I never would’ve found otherwise. During Carnevale season (which, fair warning, gets absolutely chaotic around here), they helped me figure out the best times to get around without getting stuck in the parade crowds. The breakfast situation is solid too – nothing fancy, but proper coffee and decent pastries, plus they had fresh fruit that actually tasted like something. I noticed they close the dining room around 10, so don’t expect to roll down at 10:30 expecting a full spread.
The whole place just feels… lived-in, I guess? Like it’s been here long enough to figure out what works. There’s parking if you need it (which in Viareggio is honestly half the battle), and the evening crowd in the lobby tends to be a mix of Italian families and international visitors who clearly did their homework. I overheard conversations in at least four languages during my three nights there. One small thing – the elevator’s a bit slow, but that’s pretty standard for older buildings in this part of town, and honestly, it gave me an excuse to take the stairs and work off all that gelato from the place around the corner.

What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: Our room was at the back of the hotel, a little small and slightly shabby
The roof top terrace was a perfect place to have a sundowner. Location right in the centre of the best part of the promenade.
This was the perfect place to stay for our short visit to Florence (2 nights). Location is everything, and this hotel did not disappoint. Around the corner from the Duomo and a short walk to the train station. Yet peaceful and quiet!
Brilliant trattorias in the street with authentic atmosphere, food and very reasonably priced (best meal we had on the trip was at one of these!).
Sad that we only stayed two nights - wish we could have stayed more.
Definitely recommend to others travellers if you're wanting an experience when in Florence
