Ninfeo dell’ Arancera

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Tuscany, but Ninfeo dell’Arancera actually surprised me – and honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to this converted villa in Calci. The thing is, most people zip right past this little commune on their way to Pisa (it’s only about 15 minutes from the Leaning Tower, by the way), but they’re missing something special here. The hotel sits in what used to be Villa Scorzi, and you can tell they put real thought into keeping the original character intact. When you walk into the lobby, there’s this gorgeous old staircase that creaks just enough to remind you you’re in a building with actual history, not some modern replica.

What really got me was the whole orange grove situation – I mean, the name literally translates to “nymphaeum of the orange grove,” and they weren’t kidding around. The property has these incredible citrus trees everywhere, and in the morning when you’re having breakfast on the terrace, you can actually smell the orange blossoms mixed with that particular Tuscan morning air. It’s sort of intoxicating, honestly. The rooms themselves feel authentically Italian without being stuffy about it – mine had these beautiful old tile floors and shuttered windows that opened onto the gardens. The beds are comfortable (crucial detail that fancy hotels sometimes mess up), and the bathrooms are updated enough that you’re not dealing with temperamental plumbing, which… well, anyone who’s traveled in Italy knows that’s not always a given in historic properties.

Here’s what locals won’t tell you but I will: Calci is actually perfectly positioned if you want to explore the real Tuscany without fighting tourist crowds every day. You’re close enough to hit Pisa when you want to, but you can also drive into the hills toward Vicopisano or even take day trips to Florence (about an hour). The staff at Ninfeo really knows the area – they pointed me toward this incredible little osteria in the village that I never would have found otherwise. Parking isn’t a nightmare like it is in the bigger cities, and the whole place has this calm, residential feel that makes you actually want to slow down and relax. The 9.3 rating makes sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Tuscany, but everything works exactly like it should, the service feels genuinely warm rather than performative, and you wake up feeling like you’ve actually experienced something authentic. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the acoustics of the building mean it stays surprisingly quiet even when other guests are around, which is rare in these older conversions.

the room is next to the amazing ancient villa, very beautiful surroundings, and you can use the swimming pool inside the villa, it’s with a stunning view. The Italian breakfast is beyond the words, the croissant and poundcake are served freshly, I would say it’s even better than the ones I tried in France. the lady also serve some hot dishes such as eggs and toast with ham, it’s delicious. also you have 2 lazy and cute cats live in the same place, make it even more lovely, I would like come back again
