Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places around Monte Argentario, and Le Dimore di Terrarossa honestly caught me off guard – in the best way possible. You know how sometimes you book a place online and cross your fingers it’ll be decent? Well, this one actually delivers on what it promises. The property sits right in Località Terrarossa, which if you’re not familiar with the area, is this gorgeous stretch between Porto Ercole and the more touristy bits. It’s far enough from the summer crowds that you can actually hear the waves at night, but close enough that you can walk into town for dinner without needing a car every single time.

The rooms have this authentic Tuscan feel – I mean, not the over-the-top fake rustic stuff you see sometimes, but genuinely thoughtful design. Stone walls, terracotta tiles that stay cool even in July heat, and honestly some of the most comfortable beds I’ve encountered in Italy (which is saying something, because Italian hotels can be hit or miss with mattresses). What really got me was the attention to little things – proper water pressure in the shower, blackout curtains that actually block light, and they’ve got this lovely herb garden where they source ingredients for breakfast. The staff knows their stuff too; when I mentioned wanting to avoid the Porto Ercole parking nightmare, they pointed me toward this little-known spot near the old fortress that locals use.

Here’s the thing though – and I wish someone had told me this beforehand – the location is incredible if you’re planning to explore the whole Argentario peninsula, but you’ll want a car. It’s not exactly a stroll to the main piazza, more like a 15-minute walk down a winding road that’s gorgeous during the day but pretty dark at night. That said, the peace and quiet you get in return is absolutely worth it. I slept better there than I had in months, and the morning views over the Mediterranean are the kind that make you understand why people fall in love with this coast. The 8.6 rating makes total sense – it’s not trying to be the flashiest place around, but it nails all the fundamentals while giving you that authentic Maremma experience that’s getting harder to find these days.
