Le Dimore del Borgo
Lucca, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Le Dimore del Borgo? It’s actually tucked away on Via Augusto Passaglia, which honestly most tourists never find – and that’s exactly why it works so well. I mean, you’re still only a fifteen-minute walk from Lucca’s famous walls, but you’re staying in what feels like a proper Italian neighborhood where locals are walking their dogs and chatting with shopkeepers. The building itself has that understated Tuscan elegance thing going on, nothing flashy, just solid and welcoming in that way Italian places do so well.
The rooms are genuinely comfortable – I’m talking about real comfort, not just pretty photos. The beds actually let you sleep in (crucial after those long Italian dinners), and the bathrooms have proper water pressure, which honestly can be hit or miss in historic buildings around here. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night; Via Passaglia doesn’t get the tourist foot traffic, so you’re not dealing with people wandering around looking for their hotel at 2 AM. The staff genuinely knows the area too – they pointed me toward this little osteria about three blocks away that I never would’ve found otherwise, and it ended up being one of those perfect local spots where the menu changes based on what’s good that day.
Here’s the thing about staying here: you get to experience Lucca like someone who actually lives there, at least a bit. There’s a small alimentari right around the corner where you can grab morning coffee and pastries (the cornetti are legit), and you’re close enough to the centro storico to wander over whenever you want, but far enough out that you’re not paying centro prices for everything. The whole area comes alive in the early evening when people are heading home from work – it’s got that authentic Italian rhythm that’s harder to find right in the tourist zone. I stayed here during shoulder season and it felt perfectly positioned; busy enough to have energy but not so crowded that you’re fighting for space everywhere. Plus, parking is actually manageable in this neighborhood if you’re driving, which honestly is a huge relief compared to trying to navigate the narrow streets closer to the walls.

What could be improved: Nothing!
I would upgrade de mattress, specially in the small room.
What could be improved: A kitchen but no sharp knife for cutting and few implements. Kettle didn’t work. Aircon was on but ineffective.
What could be improved: Maybe the checkout time is a bit early in my opinion.
