Villa La Tuia B&B
You know what? I’ve stayed in a lot of B&Bs around Tuscany, but Villa La Tuia actually surprised me. It’s tucked away on Viale Agostino Marti – honestly, I walked past it twice before spotting the sign because it blends so naturally into this leafy residential stretch just outside Lucca’s city walls. The address might say it’s in the city center, but it feels more like you’re staying in someone’s elegant neighborhood, which I mean… you sort of are. The whole area has this lived-in Italian charm where you’ll hear church bells mixing with the distant hum of Vespas, especially in the early morning when locals are heading to work.
The villa itself is one of those converted family homes that manages to feel both grand and intimate – think high ceilings and original terrazzo floors, but with just enough rooms that you’re not bumping into tour groups at breakfast. The owners (and I’m pretty sure they actually live on-site) have this way of making recommendations that feel genuine, not like they’re getting kickbacks from restaurants. They pointed me toward this tiny osteria about ten minutes’ walk away that I never would’ve found otherwise. What really won me over was the garden – there’s this sprawling backyard where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rare when you’re this close to a historic city center. I spent way too much time out there with morning coffee, watching the light filter through these massive oak trees.
The practical stuff matters too, and here’s where Villa La Tuia really delivers. Parking is included (trust me, you’ll appreciate this if you’re driving in Lucca), and it’s the kind of secure parking where you don’t worry about your rental car. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place – nothing revolutionary, but everything works properly and the beds are actually comfortable, not just pretty. I stayed during shoulder season in October, so it was quiet, though I imagine summer might get a bit livelier with families. The breakfast spread is generous without being overwhelming – proper Italian coffee, fresh pastries from a local bakery, and they don’t rush you out if you want to linger. Location-wise, you’re about a 15-minute pleasant walk to Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, but far enough out that you escape the day-tripper crowds once you’re back at the villa. It’s the kind of place where you can picture yourself settling in for several days to really explore Lucca properly, rather than just checking it off a list.
