La Meria di Maria Villa Rosa
Grosseto, ItalyYou know what? I’ve stayed in plenty of places around Tuscany, but La Meria di Maria Villa Rosa genuinely surprised me. It’s tucked away on Via Angelo Poliziano – honestly, I walked past it twice before spotting the entrance because it’s so elegantly understated. This isn’t one of those flashy hotels screaming for attention; it’s more like discovering someone’s incredibly well-appointed family estate that just happens to welcome guests.
The location is actually perfect if you know Grosseto at all. You’re basically a five-minute walk from the historic center and those medieval walls everyone talks about, but here’s the thing – you’re far enough from the main tourist drag that you won’t hear groups wandering around at midnight. I mean, Grosseto isn’t exactly Florence in terms of crowds, but still. The street itself is quiet, lined with those gorgeous Italian buildings that make you want to move here permanently. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven in Italian city centers will appreciate.
What really got me was the attention to detail inside. The rooms have this warm, lived-in elegance – think antique furniture that’s actually comfortable, not just pretty to look at. The bathroom in my room had these beautiful tiles that felt cool underfoot (trust me, that matters in summer), and the shower pressure was honestly better than my apartment back home. Little things like proper bedside reading lights and actual hangers in the closet – you’d be amazed how many boutique places mess up the basics.
The staff here actually knows the area, which is rarer than it should be. When I asked about restaurants, they didn’t just hand me a generic list – they asked what I was in the mood for and sent me to this incredible family-run trattoria about ten minutes away where I had the best wild boar ragu of my life. They also tipped me off that Thursday mornings there’s a fantastic local market just a few blocks over that most tourists completely miss.
Breakfast deserves its own mention – it’s served in this beautiful room with windows overlooking a small courtyard, and everything feels fresh and locally sourced. The coffee was proper Italian espresso, not that watery stuff some hotels try to pass off. I actually lingered over breakfast each morning, which is saying something because I’m usually rushing out to sightsee.
Here’s what really sealed it for me: the whole place just feels authentic. It’s not trying to be a theme park version of Italy – it’s just genuinely Italian hospitality done right. The building has character (you can hear it settling at night in that comforting old-house way), the decor tells a story, and everything from the linens to the welcome feels thoughtful rather than corporate.
If you’re planning to explore the Maremma region – and honestly, you should because it’s stunning and way less crowded than other parts of Tuscany – this is the kind of place that makes you want to come back. It’s got that 9.7 rating for good reason, and I say that as someone who’s usually skeptical of places with perfect scores.

What could be improved: Da wir zum Teil kühles Wetter hatten, hielten wir uns öfter innen auf. Dort bot der Wohnraum etwas wenig bequeme Sitzgelegenheiten für sieben Personen.

Thanks very much Letizia!!!😊
Ein perfekter Ort für einen Badeurlaub! Auch die Nähe zu Grosseto ist einfach wunderbar.
Wir als Familie mit 4 Personen haben es wirklich sehr dort genossen.
