La Locanda Di San Francesco
Montepulciano, ItalyHonestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked into La Locanda Di San Francesco – I mean, it’s tucked right into this ancient piazza that looks like it hasn’t changed in centuries. But you know what? That’s exactly what makes this place so damn special. The moment you step through those heavy wooden doors, you’re basically living inside a piece of Montepulciano history, and I’m not being dramatic here.
The location is absolutely killer – you’re literally on Piazza San Francesco, which sounds touristy but is actually where locals still gather in the evenings. You can hear the church bells from San Francesco (obviously), and honestly, after a day or two, they become this weirdly comforting soundtrack instead of an annoyance. The rooms have this perfect balance of old-world charm and modern comfort that so many places try to pull off but fail miserably at. I stayed in one overlooking the piazza, and watching the morning light hit those medieval stones while sipping espresso… well, it’s the kind of moment that makes you understand why people fall in love with Tuscany. The beds are actually comfortable too – not those rock-hard European mattresses that leave you walking like a pretzel.
What really sold me on this place was how the staff treated it like their own home rather than just another hotel. The front desk guy (I think his name was Marco?) knew every single wine bar within walking distance and steered me away from the obvious tourist traps toward this tiny enoteca down Via di Voltaia where the owner let me taste wines that weren’t even on the menu. That’s the kind of local knowledge you can’t Google, you know? Parking can be a bit tricky since the historic center is mostly pedestrian-only, but they’ll sort you out with directions to the closest spot – just don’t expect to pull right up to the front door. The whole building has this lived-in authenticity that you feel in everything from the creaky (but charming) hallway floors to the way the bathroom tiles are slightly uneven because, well, this place has been here longer than most countries have existed. Sure, the Wi-Fi can be spotty in some corners, and the air conditioning isn’t Arctic-level powerful, but when you’re in a 14th-century building in one of Italy’s most beautiful hill towns, those feel like pretty minor trade-offs. I’d honestly come back here just to sit in that piazza with a glass of Vino Nobile and watch the world go by – the fact that the hotel itself is this cozy and well-run is just the cherry on top.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Room was over the bar area so a little noisy when we went to bed. Other than that, everything was great!
Amazing views.
What could be improved: We loved everything! Really wished our itinerary would have allowed an additional night or two!
What could be improved: No lift available although the stairs to our room weren't horrible.
What could be improved: Tricky driving in Montepulciano to and from property. We wish they would have had live music but were told it was only outside in the summer. I should have checked ahead of time.
What could be improved: Directions getting there. Google maps not accurate.
What could be improved: Nothing, all was great.
