Hotel Plaza
You know what struck me first about Hotel Plaza? It’s actually tucked away in this quiet pocket of Porto Azzurro called Fanaletto – most people rush straight to the main harbor area, but honestly, you’re better off here. The location means you get that authentic Elba vibe without the cruise ship crowds that sometimes swarm the central piazza during summer months.
The hotel itself has this understated elegance that I really appreciated. It’s a proper 4-star place, but not in that stuffy, intimidating way – more like someone’s stylish Italian relative decided to open their beautifully maintained home to guests. The lobby has these gorgeous local stone accents, and I mean, you can actually smell the Mediterranean gardens from the entrance. Check-in was refreshingly smooth too; the staff spoke excellent English and seemed genuinely interested in helping us figure out the best beach spots (they steered us away from the tourist traps and toward Barbarossa, which was absolutely the right call). The rooms are spacious by Italian coast standards, and here’s something that mattered way more than I expected – the air conditioning actually works properly, which isn’t always a given in this part of Italy during August.
What really sets this place apart though is how it sits in the landscape. From most rooms, you’ve got these sweeping views over the hills toward the coast, and the whole property feels designed to take advantage of those evening breezes that roll in from the sea. The pool area becomes magical around sunset – locals from town sometimes stop by the adjacent bar area, so you get this nice mix of travelers and residents that feels very natural. Parking was never an issue, which is honestly a huge relief if you’re planning to explore the island properly (and you should – the drive up to the old fortress takes maybe ten minutes). The only minor thing I’d mention is that you’re about a 15-minute walk from the main harbor restaurants, but there’s a lovely path that winds through some residential streets, and honestly, after a day of beach-hopping, that little evening stroll became part of our routine. Plus, the hotel restaurant is genuinely good – not just convenient, but the kind of place where you’d actually choose to eat. That 9.1 rating makes perfect sense when you experience the whole package.
