Dame di Toscana
You know what? I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Tuscany, but Dame di Toscana in Lastra a Signa actually surprised me. It’s about 15 minutes outside Florence – and honestly, that’s a good thing. You get all the Tuscan charm without the tourist crowds stumbling past your window at 2 AM.
The hotel sits on Via Santa Lucia, which is this quiet residential street that feels properly Italian. I mean, you’ve got locals walking their dogs in the morning, the smell of fresh bread drifting from the bakery around the corner, that sort of thing. The building itself has that warm stone facade you see everywhere in this region, but they’ve clearly put some serious money into renovating the inside. My room had these gorgeous exposed beams (the real deal, not fake ones) and the bathroom was surprisingly modern – marble everywhere, rainfall shower that actually had decent pressure. The bed was comfortable too, which… well, you never know with European hotels sometimes.
What really got me was the breakfast setup. They serve it in this glass-walled room that looks out onto their garden, and honestly, it’s the kind of spread that makes you want to linger. Fresh pastries from town, local honey, proper espresso – not that machine stuff you get at chains. The staff actually seems to care about what they’re doing, which is refreshing. The woman at reception (I think her name was Giulia?) knew the bus schedule to Florence by heart and steered me toward this incredible trattoria in the old town that I never would have found otherwise.
Here’s the thing about Lastra a Signa – it’s not just a place to sleep before hitting Florence. The historic center is genuinely worth exploring, especially if you time it right for the evening passeggiata when everyone’s out walking. There’s this medieval tower that’s beautifully lit at night, and the main piazza has a couple of wine bars where you can actually have a conversation without shouting. Plus, if you’re driving, parking here is a breeze compared to the nightmare that is Florence city center.
The hotel’s 9.7 rating makes sense when you add it all up. It’s not trying to be some grand luxury resort – it’s just doing everything really well. The location gives you that authentic Tuscan town experience while keeping Florence totally accessible (there’s a train station about 10 minutes away if you don’t want to deal with driving). And honestly, after spending days walking around Florence’s cobblestones, coming back to this quiet spot feels like a genuine retreat. The kind of place where you might actually use the hotel’s common areas instead of just hiding in your room, you know?

Guest Reviews
We left our car and took the train to Florence. A 5 minute walk to the station and a 20 min. ride to Florence, it was very convenient.
Self check -in was thoroughly explained and easy.
Highly recommended 👌
The apartments are a short drive from Florence and there is ample parking too. Everything was looked after and any questions we had were taken care of swiftly. We could not recommend a stay here enough
Close to train station (we walked), where you can get a quick train into Florence.
Beautiful scenery.
