Hotel Mediterraneo Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Hotel Mediterraneo, I’ll be honest — it doesn’t scream sophistication from the outside. This four-star property sits along Via Aurelia in the Collesalvetti area, about 15 minutes from Livorno‘s center, and it has that understated Italian charm that grows on you. The free parking right at the hotel was actually a relief (anyone who’s driven around Italian coastal towns knows what I mean), and the staff greeted me with genuine warmth rather than rehearsed politeness.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s the thing about staying in Stagno — you’re perfectly positioned between Livorno’s port energy and Pisa’s tourist crowds without being stuck in either. The hotel sits in what locals call a “quiet zone,” which means you’ll hear birds instead of traffic most mornings. It’s about a 20-minute drive to Pisa’s airport, and honestly, having that buffer from the main tourist areas made my stay feel more authentic. You know what surprised me? How many guests I met were return visitors — there’s clearly something here that keeps people coming back.
The Room Experience
My room was larger than I expected, with that classic Italian tile flooring that stays cool even in summer heat. The furnishings aren’t cutting-edge modern, but they’re comfortable and well-maintained — sort of like staying at a well-kept family home rather than a corporate hotel. The bathroom was spotless, and I actually appreciated the old-school attention to detail, like fresh towels that smelled like they’d been line-dried. The air conditioning worked perfectly (crucial in July), and the Wi-Fi was reliable enough for video calls back home.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast setup here is where Hotel Mediterraneo really shines. They do both continental and buffet options, but it’s the quality that impressed me — fresh pastries that taste homemade, local cheeses I hadn’t tried before, and coffee that’s actually strong enough to wake you up. The dining restaurant serves regional Tuscan dishes, and while the menu isn’t huge, everything I tried was prepared with care. I mean, when you’re this close to the coast, the seafood pasta is pretty much mandatory — and it didn’t disappoint.
Why Guests Love It
What strikes me most about this place is how it attracts couples looking for a genuine Italian experience without the tourist circus. The staff remembers your name after one night, the pace is relaxed, and you’re close enough to explore Livorno’s port culture or take day trips to Pisa without feeling rushed. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Tuscany — it’s just doing hospitality right, with that Italian warmth that makes you want to extend your stay. The fact that so many guests return tells you everything you need to know about whether this place delivers on its promises.
Tuscany’s hotels pair barrel-aging cellars, fresco breakfasts, and concierge-led Siena cathedral climbs.

In a convenient location especially for the ferry port. A nice large room – plenty of space if you had work to do. Breakfast had enormous choice. Plenty of parking at the front of the hotel

Lovely room, clean and comfortable.
Fabiano from Germany (8/10)
The hotel is quite good. It's in the industrial part of the city, but for the value it was a quite good surprise. The rooms were comfy and quiet and the bathroom was clean and didn't smell, which is some quite rare these days in hotels.
Breakfast was also quite good.Klara from Slovenia (7/10)

It was just one transit night, so we didn't expect much about our very stay at the hotel. It was just OK for our needs of the day: perfect to rest and change dress.

The hotel is placed very close to the ferry and also the staff is really kind and helpful with a smile on the face all the time. The room we had for a family (403) was very spaceous.
