Villa Belverde Boutique Hotel
You know what caught me off guard about Villa Belverde? The fact that it’s tucked away on Viale XX Settembre – honestly, I walked past it twice before realizing this unassuming building was actually hiding one of Carrara’s best-kept secrets. From the outside, it looks like just another elegant Italian townhouse, but step inside and you’ll immediately get why this place has a 9.6 rating.
The owner, Maria, has this way of making you feel like you’re staying at a particularly stylish friend’s place rather than a hotel. She actually remembers your name (not just for the first day, either) and has these incredibly specific recommendations that you won’t find in any guidebook. Like how she told me the best time to visit the Fantiscritti marble quarries is around 4 PM when the light hits the marble walls just right – she was absolutely spot on. The rooms themselves are what I’d call “thoughtfully curated” without being pretentious about it. Everything feels intentional, from the locally-sourced marble accents (well, you’re in Carrara after all) to the way they’ve positioned the furniture to catch the morning light. My room overlooked this quiet courtyard where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, which is pretty remarkable considering you’re basically in the town center.
What really sets this place apart is how Maria and her team seem to anticipate what you need before you realize you need it. The morning I was planning to drive up to the Apuan Alps, there was already a packed lunch waiting at the front desk – apparently she’d overheard me mentioning it the night before. And parking, which can be a nightmare in these old Italian towns, is actually sorted out behind the building in this small private lot. It’s not huge, but there’s always been a spot when I’ve stayed there. The breakfast deserves its own mention – it’s served in this sun-drenched room that feels more like a conservatory, and everything is either made in-house or sourced from local producers. I mean, the jam alone is worth getting up early for, and I’m definitely not a morning person. The location is honestly perfect if you want to explore both the marble heritage and the coast – you’re a ten-minute walk from the Duomo and the marble workshops, but you can also be at the beaches of Marina di Carrara in about fifteen minutes by car. During summer evenings, the nearby Piazza Alberica comes alive with locals, and you’ll often find impromptu concerts or just people gathering to chat. It’s that authentic Italian small-town atmosphere that’s getting harder to find these days.
