Agriturismo Il Poderuccio
You know what? I was honestly skeptical about staying at an agriturismo at first – I mean, how good could a working farm really be as a hotel? But Il Poderuccio completely changed my mind about these places. It’s tucked away on this winding strada that branches off the main road through Castiglione d’Orcia, and honestly, the drive up there is half the experience. You’re basically climbing into the heart of the Val d’Orcia, and suddenly you’re surrounded by those rolling hills that look like someone painted them just for postcards. The property itself sits on this ridge where you can see forever – I’m talking about views that stretch all the way to Monte Amiata on clear days. The buildings have that weathered Tuscan stone look that actually feels authentic (not like some of those places that try too hard), and you can tell this family has been working this land for generations.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep it feeling like a real working farm while still being genuinely comfortable. The rooms are in converted farm buildings, but they’ve done the renovations thoughtfully – exposed beams, terracotta floors, and these thick stone walls that keep everything cool even in August. Our room had this massive window that opened right onto the olive groves, and I swear the smell of lavender and rosemary just drifted in all day. The breakfast is where they really shine though – everything comes from right there on the property or from their neighbors. Fresh ricotta, honey from their own hives, and this incredible jam made from their fruit trees. You eat it on this terrace overlooking the valley, and honestly, it’s hard to imagine starting your day any other way. The family that runs it – they’re genuinely warm people who seem to actually enjoy having guests, not just tolerating them. They’ll point you toward the best hiking trails (there’s this amazing walk down to the Orcia river that most tourists never find), and they know all the local producers if you want to buy wine or cheese to take home.
The location is actually perfect if you want to explore this part of Tuscany without dealing with crowds. You’re maybe fifteen minutes from Pienza, twenty from Montalcino, but you feel completely removed from all the tour bus chaos. Evenings are incredibly peaceful – just cicadas and the occasional sheep bell. I will say, you definitely need a car to stay here, and the road can be a bit tricky in the dark if you’re not used to it. But that’s part of what makes it special, honestly. It’s not trying to be convenient or accessible to everyone – it’s just this beautiful slice of Tuscan farm life that happens to have really comfortable beds and incredible views. If you’re looking for something authentic in the Val d’Orcia, this is exactly what you want.

Guest Reviews
You are well situated to travel to amazing wineries in Montalcino and Montepulciano.
We were fortunate to see wild boar and deer on the road to get there.
We liked Fabbiana, the manager. She can give you good restaurant recommendations!
It’s very quiet and clean.
They provided fresh mountain spring water in the refrigerator from Mt. Amiata.
The kitchen had some basic cooking supplies like salt, pepper, and balsamic vinegar.
The bed was comfortable.
FYI (neither good or bad):
You will need to travel about 2.5 miles down a gravel road to reach it, but the road is in good condition. Just know that it will take you about 10 minutes to drive to the little town of San Quirico d’Orcia.
The nearest grocery store (COOP Market) in San Quirico is closed between 1-4:00 pm in the afternoon, so plan accordingly.
She makes the most amazing cappuccino. Don’t miss that.
