Hotel Continentale
You know what struck me first about Hotel Continentale? It’s right there on Piazza Guido Monaco, which honestly isn’t where most tourists end up wandering – and that’s exactly why I loved it. I mean, you’re still in the heart of Arezzo, but it feels like you’ve stumbled onto the locals’ turf. The building itself has this understated elegance that screams “actually Italian” rather than trying too hard to be charming. When I checked in, the lobby had that perfect mix of polished marble and worn leather chairs that somehow manages to feel both fancy and lived-in. The staff actually remembered my name by day two (rare for a 4-star place, honestly), and they had this genuine warmth that made me think they weren’t just going through the motions.
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – clean, comfortable, with those heavy curtains that Europeans do so well. But here’s the thing: the windows in my room opened onto this little slice of daily Arezzo life. I could hear the morning coffee ritual at the bar across the street, watch the nonnas doing their shopping rounds, and get a real sense of the city’s rhythm. The Wi-Fi actually worked (always a gamble in Italian hotels), and the shower had proper pressure – small victories that matter when you’re traveling. I will say the air conditioning was a bit temperamental, but honestly, most places in historic Italian buildings are. What really won me over was the location’s practicality. You’re a five-minute walk from the Basilica of San Francesco (where those incredible Piero della Francesca frescoes are), and Via Cavour with all its shops and restaurants is right around the corner.
The breakfast spread was surprisingly good – not just the usual continental stuff, but they had local pecorino and some really decent prosciutto. Plus, there’s this little courtyard where you can eat outside when the weather’s nice, and it feels like you’re in on some secret that the tour groups haven’t discovered yet. Look, it’s not going to blow your mind or make your Instagram followers jealous, but Hotel Continentale does something better – it lets you feel like you’re actually staying in Arezzo, not just visiting it. For the price point and that 8.2 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. If you want to wake up in a real Italian city rather than a tourist bubble, this is your spot.
