Grand Hotel Bonanno
You know what struck me first about the Grand Hotel Bonanno? It’s tucked away on Via Carlo Francesco Gabba, which honestly sounds more impressive than it looks – it’s actually this quiet residential street that most tourists never stumble across. But that’s exactly why I ended up loving it. You’re literally a ten-minute walk from the Leaning Tower chaos, but when you come back in the evening, it feels like you’ve escaped to where actual Pisans live.
The building itself has that solid, understated Italian elegance thing going on – none of the flashy marble lobbies you see in some four-stars, just really good bones and details that make sense. The staff actually remembers your name after day two, which I mean, shouldn’t be remarkable but somehow is these days. Check-in was smooth, though they did mention the elevator can be a bit temperamental (it’s one of those old-school European ones that takes forever but has character). My room faced the internal courtyard, so zero street noise – apparently the ones facing Via Gabba can get a bit of morning traffic, but nothing terrible.
What really sold me was how they handle the whole Pisa tourist thing. The concierge – this guy named Marco who’s been there forever – actually steered me away from the obvious restaurants near the tower and pointed me toward this little osteria on Via Santa Maria that locals actually use. He also mentioned that if you want decent photos of the tower without the crowds, early morning or right before sunset works best, but honestly, most hotel staff just hand you a generic map and wish you luck. The breakfast spread was solid too – proper Italian coffee, fresh pastries from somewhere nearby (not the frozen stuff), and they actually had decent prosciutto. Nothing fancy, but you know it’s real when Italian guests are eating there too.
The neighborhood grows on you quickly. There’s a little alimentari around the corner where the owner speaks about three words of English but somehow you end up having full conversations anyway. Walking to the center takes you through these quiet residential streets where you see actual laundry hanging from windows and old men playing cards in doorways – it’s the Italy you hope to find but rarely do when you’re staying in the tourist zones. The Arno is maybe five minutes away if you want to walk along the river, and the whole historic center is completely walkable from here.
I’ll be honest – it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury amenities or Instagram-worthy design. But after three nights, I realized that’s exactly what made it work. It feels like staying in Pisa rather than just visiting it. The 8.2 rating makes sense – it’s the kind of place that does everything well without trying too hard to impress you. If you’re looking for a rooftop pool or a spa, look elsewhere. But if you want to feel like you actually experienced the city instead of just checking off the tower, this is your spot.
