Grand Hotel Baglioni
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked into the Grand Hotel Baglioni, I wasn’t expecting much from the outside. The building sits right on this little piazza (Piazza Unità Italiana) that most tourists completely miss, which is actually perfect because you’re literally a three-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella station but without all the chaos that comes with it. The entrance is sort of understated in that classic Florentine way – no flashy signs or doormen making a scene, just elegant stone and those heavy wooden doors that make you feel like you’re entering someone’s very expensive home.
But step inside and… wow. The lobby hits you with this mix of old-world Florence and modern comfort that somehow doesn’t feel forced. I mean, you’ve got original frescoes on the ceiling – actual 16th-century artwork – alongside contemporary furniture that actually looks comfortable enough to sink into after a day of tramping around the Uffizi. The marble floors echo just enough to remind you you’re somewhere special, but the Persian rugs scattered around soften everything nicely. What really got me was the staff’s approach – they know their stuff without being pretentious about it. When I asked about dinner reservations, the concierge didn’t just rattle off the usual tourist traps but actually asked what I was in the mood for and pointed me toward this tiny osteria on Via del Sole that I never would have found otherwise.
The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star in this part of Florence – not huge (this is a medieval city center, after all), but thoughtfully designed with plenty of storage and those thick walls that actually keep the street noise down. I stayed on the third floor facing the piazza, and honestly, it was dead quiet at night despite being so central. The bathroom was modern without trying too hard to be trendy, and the shower pressure was better than my apartment back home. You know what impressed me most though? The little details – like how they leave actual Florentine cookies from a local bakery instead of generic hotel chocolates, or how the room service menu includes panettone from Dolci & Dolcezze, which is where locals actually go. The Wi-Fi worked perfectly (crucial for those inevitable “look where I am” photos from your window), and the air conditioning was whisper-quiet even during that heat wave in July. Sure, you’re paying Florence prices, but when you’re steps from the Duomo and can walk to Oltrarno in ten minutes while staying somewhere that feels authentically Florentine rather than generically international, it’s worth it.
