Giglio & Viola Borgia
You know what hit me first when I walked into the Giglio & Viola Borgia? The smell – not cleaning products or that generic hotel air freshener, but something warmer, like old wood and fresh linens mixed together. It’s tucked right on via del Parione, which honestly most tourists walk past without noticing, but locals know this little street connects you to basically everything worth seeing in Florence.
The thing about this place is it actually feels like Florence, if that makes sense. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Arno, and Santa Maria Novella station is close enough that you can hear the faint rumble of trains if you really listen – but it’s not annoying, just sort of… urban background music. The staff here gets it too. When I asked about dinner recommendations, the guy at the front desk didn’t just hand me a tourist brochure. He actually walked me outside and pointed toward this little osteria on via del Moro that I never would’ve found otherwise. That’s the kind of insider knowledge that makes a difference.
The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, but with character. High ceilings, good lighting (finally, a hotel that understands you need to actually see things), and beds that don’t feel like they came from a catalog. The bathroom had this gorgeous old mirror that looked original to the building – details like that matter when you’re staying in a city where every corner has history. Honestly, the only minor gripe I had was the Wi-Fi got a bit spotty on the third floor, but that’s pretty standard for these older Florentine buildings with their thick walls.
What really sold me though was the morning routine. You step outside and you’re right in the heart of the Santa Maria Novella neighborhood – not the touristy part, but where actual Florentines grab their cornetto and espresso. There’s this little café about thirty seconds away where the barista started recognizing me by day three. And if you’re into early morning walks (which I highly recommend), you can be at the Ponte Vecchio before the crowds arrive, just watching the light hit the water. The location is sort of perfect that way – residential enough to feel authentic, but you’re never more than a five-minute walk from major sights.
The 8.9 rating makes total sense when you experience the place. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Florence, but it nails what most travelers actually want: comfort, character, and a genuine connection to the city. The staff clearly takes pride in what they do, the neighborhood feels real, and you wake up excited to explore rather than feeling like you’re stuck in some generic accommodation bubble. If you’re looking for a place that enhances your Florence experience rather than just housing you, this is it.

Guest Reviews
The bed was comfortable but I didn't like the fat and hard pillows.
The shower was good with great pressure but the tap in the kitchen didn't.
The washing machine and dishwasher worked.
The oven worked but the glass on the door of the oven was very loose.
The main bedroom and living room were big, for Florence.
Clean and comfortable with a good amount of space.
Both bedrooms ensuite
