Fonteverde Lifestyle & Thermal Retreat – The Leading Hotels of the World
You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of fancy places in Tuscany, but Fonteverde actually surprised me – and I mean that in the best way possible. When you first pull up to this place in San Casciano dei Bagni (honestly, most people haven’t even heard of this little thermal town), it feels almost too grand for the sleepy countryside around it. But then you step inside and immediately understand why it’s part of The Leading Hotels – there’s this perfect balance between luxury and the kind of authentic Tuscan warmth that’s getting harder to find these days.
The thermal springs are obviously the main draw here, and let me tell you, they’re the real deal. I mean, people have been soaking in these waters since Roman times, which you can actually feel when you’re floating in those outdoor pools looking out over the Val d’Orcia. The spa treatments are honestly incredible – I had this mud therapy thing that I was skeptical about, but it left my skin feeling like silk for days afterward. What I really loved though was how they’ve managed to keep it feeling intimate despite being a pretty substantial property. You’ll find quiet corners everywhere, whether it’s tucked away in the gardens or in one of those cozy reading nooks they’ve scattered throughout the main building.
The food situation is solid too – their restaurant sources most ingredients from local farms (you can actually see some of the vegetable gardens from the terrace), and the wine list leans heavily into Tuscan producers you probably haven’t heard of but definitely should try. Fair warning though: this isn’t the kind of place where you just pop in for a quick overnight. San Casciano dei Bagni is pretty remote – about an hour from Siena, maybe 45 minutes from Montepulciano – so you’re really committing to staying put and embracing the whole thermal retreat experience. Which honestly? That’s exactly what you should do. The staff genuinely knows the area and can point you toward little medieval villages and family-run wineries that tourists usually miss completely. I spent three nights there last September and barely wanted to leave the property except for a quick trip to nearby Sarteano for dinner one evening. The whole place just has this restorative energy that’s hard to fake – probably helps that you’re literally soaking in healing waters that have been bubbling up from the earth for centuries.

The hotel staff were similarly helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. The hotel drivers who undertook our transfers to and from Florence Airport to the hotel were particularly good: friendly, informative, polite and very safe drivers.
