Firenze al Duomo
Florence, ItalyYou know what hits you first when you walk into Firenze al Duomo? The fact that you’re literally sleeping next to one of the most famous buildings in the world – and I mean literally. The Duomo is right there, so close you could probably toss a gelato cone at it from some of the rooms (though please don’t). But here’s the thing that surprised me: despite being in the absolute epicenter of tourist madness, this place actually feels like a retreat once you’re inside.
The building itself has this sort of understated elegance that works perfectly with the medieval chaos happening outside your window. I mean, the location is absolutely bananas – you’re on Piazza del Duomo, which means you’ll have crowds of tourists basically camping outside from dawn until dusk. But honestly? That 9.7 rating makes sense once you experience how they’ve managed to create this calm, sophisticated bubble right in the storm. The rooms I’ve seen have these beautiful views – some looking straight at Brunelleschi’s dome, others giving you glimpses down the narrow streets toward the Arno. Fair warning though: if you’re a light sleeper, bring earplugs. The piazza gets lively early, especially during summer when the tour groups start gathering around 7 AM.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve nailed the balance between taking advantage of that insane location and actually being a proper hotel. You’re a thirty-second walk from the Duomo, maybe two minutes from the Baptistery, and you can basically roll out of bed and be at some of the best gelato in Florence (go to Vivoli, it’s just behind the Duomo – locals will thank me for this). But the staff clearly knows their stuff about Florence beyond just the obvious tourist spots. They’ll point you toward the good aperitivo places on Via dei Calzaiuoli before it gets mobbed, or tell you which mornings are quieter for climbing the dome. The service feels personal in a way that’s hard to find when you’re staying somewhere this central. And look, I’ll be honest – you’re paying for that location, but sometimes it’s worth it to wake up and have the entire Renaissance basically outside your front door. Just maybe book a room facing away from the piazza if you value your sleep over the view.

Andrea was a marvellous host! He was so attentive and extremely responsive.
He organised a taxi to the train station when we left, and walked with us and our luggage to where we picked up the taxi, ensuring everything went smoothly. His service was outstanding.
We highly recommend this property and the staff.
