Eremo dei Poeti Albergo diffuso

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Eremo dei Poeti on Via Colletto – honestly, the whole “albergo diffuso” concept seemed a bit gimmicky. But this place actually gets it right. Instead of cramming everything into one massive building, they’ve scattered rooms across these beautifully restored stone houses throughout the tiny hamlet of Canova, just outside Aulla. It feels like you’re staying in someone’s ancestral village home, which I guess you sort of are.

The location is pretty brilliant if you know the area. Aulla sits right where Tuscany meets Liguria, so you’re perfectly positioned for day trips to the Cinque Terre (about 45 minutes) or deeper into the Apuan Alps if you’re into hiking. What I loved most was how quiet it gets at night – you can actually hear the stream that runs below the village, and there’s this soft echo when the church bells ring that just hits differently than in bigger towns. The staff really knows their stuff too; they pointed me toward this little trattoria down in the valley that I never would’ve found otherwise. Parking isn’t a nightmare like in most Italian hill towns – there’s actually space near the main building, though you’ll be doing a bit of walking between the scattered accommodations.

The rooms themselves have this lived-in elegance that’s hard to fake. Stone walls, beamed ceilings, but with modern touches that actually work – good wifi, decent shower pressure, that sort of thing. I mean, you’re not getting five-star luxury here, but that’s missing the point entirely. It’s more about the experience of staying somewhere that feels authentic without being uncomfortable. The breakfast setup is communal and relaxed, with local honey and proper Italian coffee that’ll wake you up properly. They’ve managed to hit that sweet spot where everything feels effortless but clearly isn’t – the kind of place where the 8.9 rating makes total sense once you settle in for a day or two.
