Colle al Matrichese – Historic Winery
Montalcino, ItalyLook, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Tuscany, but Colle al Matrichese actually caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best way possible. You know how some hotels just feel like they’re trying too hard to be “authentic”? This isn’t one of those. It’s literally a working winery that happens to have rooms, tucked away in the hills about ten minutes outside Montalcino proper. The drive up is honestly half the experience – you’re winding through vineyards and olive groves, and then suddenly there’s this beautiful stone building that looks like it’s been part of the landscape forever (which, honestly, it probably has).
What really got me was how quiet it is up there. I mean, dead quiet except for the occasional tractor during harvest season and maybe some birds at dawn. The rooms have this rustic elegance thing going on – thick stone walls, wooden beams, but modern bathrooms that actually work well. The beds are comfortable too, which isn’t always a given in these historic places. And here’s something I didn’t expect: the Wi-Fi is actually decent, probably because they’re not dealing with ancient stone walls throughout the entire building. The breakfast is simple but uses ingredients from their own property and local farms – fresh pecorino, honey, really good coffee. Nothing fancy, but it tastes like… well, like Tuscany should taste.
The staff genuinely knows their wine, which makes sense since they’re making it right there. They’ll walk you through tastings without being pretentious about it, and if you’re into that sort of thing, you can actually see the production areas. I ended up shipping a case home, which was surprisingly easy to arrange. The location is perfect for exploring the Val d’Orcia – you’re close enough to hit Pienza and Montepulciano for day trips, but far enough from the tourist crowds that you feel like you’ve discovered something special. Parking is never an issue (there’s a small lot right there), and check-in was smooth even though we arrived later than planned. The 9.4 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be a luxury resort, but it nails exactly what it’s supposed to be: a genuine piece of the Tuscan countryside where you can actually relax and drink really good wine.

What could be improved: Nothing. It was a little bit difficult to light up the stove, but that is very very minor.
