Agriturismo Il Casolare Di Bucciano
San Gimignano, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Il Casolare Di Bucciano? The drive up through those winding cypress-lined roads actually makes you feel like you’re in one of those Tuscan postcards – except it’s real, and honestly, even better than the photos suggest. This place sits in Località Racciano, which sounds fancy but really just means you’re tucked away in the hills about ten minutes from San Gimignano proper. The moment you pull up (and yes, there’s proper parking – thank god, because navigating rental cars on these narrow roads is… well, let’s just say it’s character-building), you’re greeted by this beautifully restored farmhouse that somehow manages to feel both rustic and polished.
The agriturismo sits on working land, so you’ll wake up to actual farm sounds – roosters, distant sheep, that sort of thing. I mean, if you’re the type who needs absolute silence, maybe this isn’t for you, but honestly? There’s something deeply satisfying about those morning sounds when you’re sipping coffee on your terrace overlooking the Val d’Elsa. The rooms have that perfect Tuscan balance of exposed beams and modern comfort – the beds are actually good (not always a given in these historic properties), and the bathrooms have been thoughtfully updated without losing the old-world charm. What really gets me is how the family who runs this place – they’re genuinely lovely people who clearly take pride in what they’ve created here. They’ll tell you about the best hiking trails (there’s one that leads to a medieval watchtower most tourists never find), recommend the family-run osteria down in Bucciano village, and somehow remember exactly how you like your breakfast eggs.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to explore this part of Tuscany without staying right in the thick of tourist central. San Gimignano is close enough for evening strolls among those famous towers, but you can escape back to the peaceful countryside when the day-tripper crowds get overwhelming. I particularly loved how quiet it gets here after sunset – you can actually see stars, which is something you forget exists when you live in a city. The breakfast situation deserves a mention too: fresh local ingredients, homemade everything, and they serve it on this covered terrace that catches the morning light just right. Pro tip: if you’re here in late spring or early fall, the weather is absolutely perfect for those long, lazy mornings over coffee and fresh pastries. Sure, you’ll need a car to get around properly, but that’s true for most of rural Tuscany anyway. This place has that rare quality of feeling both authentically Italian and genuinely welcoming to travelers – not always easy to find, especially somewhere with an 8.9 rating that’s actually earned.

What could be improved: There were some ants in the room and a gecko which could not get out and so it left some droppings. While that was less than ideal I understand it is a vineyard and converted barn and would stay again in a heart beat.
What could be improved: Everything was lovely overall. Just as a small note – the shower corner could have been a bit more comfortable, as the door was a little tricky and space quite limited.
What could be improved: The rooms were a bit smaller than we thought, but still good! This might be personal to just me and my husband, but the building is older and I think we might be sensitive to the dust or particles or whatever those old buildings have. Stuffed sinuses the whole night (we also get this whenever we visited old cathedrals and tourist sites).
What could be improved: Very hard to think of anything I didn't like - an extra pillow in the bedroom would have been great for reading in bed, but I'm sure one would have been readily available had I remembered to ask for it. A faultless stay and I would highly recommend this agriturismo.
