Castello Vicchiomaggio
Greve in Chianti, ItalyYou know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Tuscany, but Castello Vicchiomaggio genuinely caught me off guard. When you’re driving up Via Vicchiomaggio – and honestly, the GPS might give you a little trouble finding it the first time – you start to wonder if you took a wrong turn somewhere. Then suddenly you’re pulling into what feels like a private estate, complete with actual castle towers and vineyards stretching out in every direction. The whole place sits on this hill overlooking the Chianti countryside, and I mean, the views are ridiculous. Not Instagram-fake ridiculous, but the kind where you actually stop unpacking to just stare out the window for a few minutes.
The thing about this place is it’s not trying to be anything other than what it is – a working winery that happens to have incredible rooms. The family that runs it has been making wine here for decades, and you can tell. There’s this lived-in authenticity that’s hard to fake. My room was in the main castle building (they’ve got different accommodation styles scattered around the property), and honestly, the stone walls are thick enough that you don’t hear a thing at night. Just complete silence, which is pretty amazing if you’re used to city noise. The furnishings hit that sweet spot between rustic and refined – nothing too precious, but clearly thoughtful. And the bathroom? Surprisingly modern without feeling out of place, which is trickier than it sounds in these old buildings.
What really sets this place apart, though, is how they handle the whole wine experience. I mean, you’re literally sleeping above cellars that have been aging wine since the 1400s. The smell of fermenting grapes drifts up through the property during harvest season – we were there in late September and it was incredible. They do tastings right there on the terrace, and the staff actually knows their stuff without being pretentious about it. Plus, Greve in Chianti is only about ten minutes down the road, so you can easily walk around the town square, grab dinner at one of the local spots, and still feel like you’re staying somewhere special rather than just convenient. The 9.3 rating makes complete sense when you experience it – it’s not perfect in that sterile hotel way, but it’s authentic in a way that’s becoming harder and harder to find. If you’re looking for a place that feels like Tuscany rather than just a hotel that happens to be in Tuscany, this is it.

What could be improved: Everything was perfect. There is nothing I could say about this place other than positive comments.
What could be improved: Hair dryer and mirror in bathroom could be better.
The location is also amazing, very central in tuscany to discover the region.
And the infinity pool is also amazing with the best view!
We would 1000% recommend staying at this hotel!!
What could be improved: Nothing, everything was perfect!
Plenty of other little seating areas dotted around the grounds.
The lunchtime and evening meals were served al fresco on the terrace. Great service and food with a lovely view. During the evening small lights started to come on throughout the garden - it was so pretty.
The pool area was generous and the pool was a good size infinity pool overlooking the valley. Plenty of sun beds and umbrellas, and pool towels and a bag provided in the room.
What could be improved: Breakfast was a pretty miserable affair, indoors and rooms a bit gloomy. You needed to get there early if you wanted hot food - it ran out very quickly and wasn’t replaced on the days we were there.
I would not recommend this for anyone with mobility problems. There are a lot of steps everywhere starting with the long walk from the car park to main area.
What could be improved: Noisily families that checked in and used pool
What could be improved: Everything!
